The Rams Insane?
I just read that the Rams are considering using the transition tag for a TE (5 mill) on Danny Amendola. I also read that the league most likely would deny that, but its a weird situation. It's definitely good to know that we're interested in his services.
" Rams won't be using the franchise tag on WR Danny Amendola, but are considering other options in order to keep him. "
" Funny/rediculous rumor is that they are considering using the transition tag ($5.194 M) for him as a TE."
" Hilarious. He's 5-10/185. I can't see the league approving this."
-Adam Caplan
Weird.
Also, here's PFF:
" Of Danny Amendola's 523 snaps last year, FOUR of them came lined up as a TE. That seems like an ambitious franchise tag designation. "Last edited by sosa39rams; -03-04-2013 at 11:31 AM.

Re: The Rams Insane?
That's either:
1. A bogus rumor; or
2. A "Scooby Doo" idea.*

Re: The Rams Insane?
I'm still betting that this will prove to be bogus but, just for the fun of it, I did a quick search of the CBA and found that it does not define positions (i.e. tight end) for the purpose of franchise or transition tags. While suggesting Danny Amendola is a TE is silly, I could see some scenarios where this omission could be exploited. For example, what position did Mike Alstott play? RB or FB? How about Haloti Ngata? DE or DT (they are separate positions for purposes of the franchise and transition tags).
Also, in case you were wondering, here's what would happen if there were a dispute over the designation:
Any dispute concerning the identityand Salaries of players included within each player position category, or anyother matter regarding these figures, shall be submitted to and resolved by theImpartial Arbitrator during the period from February 1 to February 1 5, or withintwenty-five days after the last day of the Restricted Free Agent SigningPeriod, respectively. The Impartial Arbitrator shall make an independentdetermination in writing. In arriving at his determination, the ImpartialArbitrator shall consider any relevant information furnished to him, andshall be provided access to all relevant Player Contracts.
So, I guess the Rams could try this gambit to tie Amendola up during the prime FA signing period, but they would do so at the risk of alienating the league office and Amendola himself.
So, again... I'll be surprised if this rumor has validity.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: The Rams Insane?
On the other side of the coin you have Jared Cook TE wanted to be tagged as a WR.
The Nashville Tennessean believes a "battle is coming" if the Titans apply the franchise tag to free agent Jared Cook ahead of Monday's deadline.
Reporter Jim Wyatt has "thought all along" Cook will be tagged, but Cook apparently has no plans to drop his demand that he be tagged as a receiver, and not a tight end. The NFLPA is backing Cook even though a "lot of people" tell Wyatt it's a "crazy argument." We expect the Titans to tag Cook Monday and worry about the ramifications later. Mar 4 - 12:03 PM

Re: The Rams Insane?
Yeah Sosa I'm aware of that with Cook. I'm not sure what I think with Cooks deal, I would think they would have to go back more then just one year to establish what position he was playing. Sounds to me that its just another way to get around some poorly written verbiage in the contract.
As far as DA I don't think that it is at all realistic on the Rams part.

Re: The Rams Insane?
They are probably going to argue that while Amendola rarely lined up in the traditional TE position, he is a slot receiver that rarely lined up outside in a traditional WR position. With TEs such as Jimmy Graham and Vernon Davis spending a lot of time in the slot, you could argue that the TE position has changed and part of the TE role is lining up in the slot
But that argument wouldn't work.

5 million is still too much to pay him.

Re: The Rams Insane?
"Danny. We're going to need you to block Aldon Smith coming off the edge."
"You got it, coach."
Cue Ambulance
Just let Cook and Amendola swap positions and be done with it.
