If Schefter is right, he'll get his FG% up to 50% on getting the scoop on the Rams' DC choice.

anyone know any tidbits about this guy? I read somewhere that he called plays the Defensive plays on 3rd down and the Lions were one of the best in that category (3rd down com%).

Apparently, he managed the defense during 3rd down situations and was ranked 5th in preventing 3rd down conversions during his tenure with Detroit despite having a weak secondary. He should be able to do more with this defense.

Rams to hire Lions' Tim Walton, according to report

Rams to hire Lions' Tim Walton, according to report - Pride Of Detroit

It appears the Detroit Lions have yet another vacancy to fill on their coaching staff, because secondary coach Tim Walton is reportedly set to join the St. Louis Rams. It was reported earlier in the week that Walton was interviewing for the Rams' defensive coordinator job, and ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Rams have decided to hire Walton.

This is the second year in a row that Jeff Fisher has expressed interest in adding Walton to his coaching staff. Last year, Walton was interviewed by the Rams for an assistant defensive coordinator position, but he opted to stay with the Lions. As a result, he got a promotion with the Lions adding third-down package to his list of responsibilities.

With the Lions losing Walton to the Rams this time around, they need to find a new secondary coach. My early guess is that they will promote Marcus Robertson who joined the coaching staff as the assistant secondary coach last year. Before coming to Detroit, he was the Tennessee Titans' secondary coach from 2009-11 and assistant secondary coach from 2007-08.

This is really a tough loss for the Lions. The results may not reflect the notion that Walton is an excellent coach, but he is very highly thought of in the NFL, as evidenced by the Rams making him their new defensive coordinator. It would have been nice to see Walton get more talent to work with in the secondary in Detroit, but now it appears he is off to St. Louis.

Re: Rams Intend to Hire DB Coach Tim Walton for DC

Here's his bio from the Lions' site. If it happens officially, I'll be excited. He seems like a rising star & a good fit for The Rams. Heck, he's even a former Buckeye; should have no problem bonding with Laurinaitis.I like that his speciality is DBs, he has college DC experience, a good NFL foundation but still green enough to be malleable and stick for a while even if successful. Perhaps slightly (I grow humble in my dotage...lol...) more importantly, Fisher obviously likes him a lot.

    Biography

Tim Walton joined the Lions as secondary coach in 2009. Before coming to Detroit, he was the defensive coordinator at the University of Memphis (2008) and had additional responsibilities coaching the safeties. Throughout his 14-year collegiate coaching career, Walton coached 13 players who were eventually drafted into the NFL, including five first round picks (Patriots S Brandon Merriweather, Seahawks CB Kelly Jennings, Giants CB Kenny Phillips, Redskins S LaRon Landry and Cardinals S Antrel Rolle) and four second round picks (S Idrees Bashir, WR/KR Devin Hester, S Michael Stone and CB Corey Webster).
LIONS COACHING HIGHLIGHTS: Walton coached a secondary that excelled in making big plays in 2011.
    • Detroit’s secondary accounted for 16 of the team’s 21 interceptions in 2011 which was the most by a group of Lions defensive backs since 2005 (16).
    • Of the unit’s 16 interceptions in 2011, three were returned for touchdowns, the most by a Lions secondary since 2001 (3).
    • Lions CB Chris Houston led team with a career-high 5 interceptions for 225 yards and 2 touchdowns in 2011 and was second with 14 pass defenses. Houston was one of only three NFL players in 2011 with 2 interception returns for touchdowns.
    • As a rookie in 2009, S Louis Delmas finished second on the team with 91 tackles. His other defensive tallies included: two interceptions (130 yds), eight passes defensed, one sack and one fumble recovery. He became the only rookie in NFL history to record a safety (vs. GB 11/26), an interception return for a touchdown (Arz 12/20) and return a fumble for a touchdown (at NO 9/13) in the same season. Delmas led the defense with 84 tackles (62 solo) in 2010 despite playing most of the season with a groin injury.

Prior to joining Memphis, Walton spent the previous four seasons (2004-07) with the Miami Hurricanes. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in February of 2007 and helped propel the defense to a national ranking of 33rd in total defense. In his first three seasons at Miami, he coached the defensive backs and the Miami secondary ranked in the top 10 nationally in pass defense in 2004 (ninth) and 2005 (first).
In 2005, Walton's pass defense led the nation, allowing only 152.17 yards per game, and featured All-Americans safety Brandon Meriweather and cornerback Kelly Jennings as well as Freshman All-American Kenny Phillips.
Walton was at LSU in 2003 and his defensive backs were a key factor in the Tigers earning the 2003 BCS National Championship and a Southeastern Conference title. The LSU defense ranked among the nation's top three in four-of-five major defensive statistical categories: total defense (first, 252.0 yards per game), scoring defense (first, 11.0 ppg), pass efficiency defense (second, 89.8 rating) and rushing defense (third, 67.0 yards per game). Additionally, LSU ranked 18th nationally in passing yardage defense (185.0 ypg) while leading the SEC in four of the five defensive categories, including a No. 2 ranking in the league in pass defense.
In his first stint with Memphis (2000-01), Walton coached defensive backs. In 2000, the Tigers ranked fifth in the nation in total defense (first in rush defense), allowing only 275 yards per game and placed in the top 15 nationally in passing and scoring defense. He left Memphis to coach defensive backs at Syracuse for the 2002 season.
Walton began his coaching career as a defensive graduate assistant at Bowling Green in 1995. He was promoted to running backs coach in 1996 and then moved to coach the defensive backs in 1999.
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Walton has had three summer internships with NFL teams. He spent the summer of 1998 serving as a defensive intern with the Chicago Bears, the summer of 2001 as a defensive intern for the Green Bay Packers and in 2004 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under current Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin.
As a defensive back at Ohio State, Walton lettered four seasons and served as co-captain for the Big Ten champions in 1993. During his time with the Buckeyes, OSU went to four bowl games, including the Liberty Bowl in 1990. He earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from OSU in 1994.
Walton and his wife, Tracy, have three children: Trei, Timia and Tyler.

Walton seems to have some pretty good credentials. I could definitely get hyped up with this pick-up. Very excited to see what he can do with the current D we've got (as well as a couple off-season acquisitions).

Walton seems fine. I don't know enough about him as a coach to really say one way or another. My impression is that the Detroit secondary hasn't been a strength of that defense, but the Lions did finish in the Top 10 defensively in terms of opponent third down conversion rate, and Walton was in charge of third down defense I believe. As I've said before, ultimately this is Fisher's defense and the rest of the staff has already been assembled. Clearly he thinks Walton is a good fit since this is the second year he's approached him, so I'm just happy it's over.

The bottom line for me is that Fisher is in charge. This is just another puppet on a string.

Yesterday Les was on the fast lane and when asked if the Rams where worried that they did not have a D cord going into the FA and the draft he said. No we are not changing our D was are staying in a 4-3. But he did say we are going to change the way we cover the receivers. Walton sounds like a guy that can come in and coach up the secondary, specificity the safeties.

Despite having subpar talent and depth on the roster, Walton has often gotten the most out of Detroit's secondary. He's shown a knack for developing individual players, molding cornerback Chris Houston into a reliable starter after the Atlanta Falcons gave up on the former second-round draft pick.

Walton has also had success developing a pair of unheralded young players, Jonte Green and Ricardo Silva, into productive members of the Lions secondary.
    By Anwar S. Richardson

Detroit safety Louis Delmas, cornerback Jacob Lacey, cornerback Chris Houston and cornerback Drayton Florence will become unrestricted free agents this offseason.
    By Josh Katzenstein
the Lions secondary exceeded expectations early in the year despite several injuries and constant lineup shuffling, though the group struggled significantly during a season-ending eight-game losing streak.

Report: Rams pick Lions' Tim Walton for defensive coordinator
    By Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
    February 13, 2013 9:26 am ET

A seven-week search that featured big names like Rob Ryan and Mike Singletary apparently has ended with the Rams choosing 41-year-old Detroit assistant Tim Walton as defensive coordinator.

Walton accepted an offer Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and the deal could be finalized by week's end.

Walton was defensive backs/third down package coach for the Lions. He has two years of coordinator experience at the college level (Miami, 2008; Memphis, 2007).

Walton also is familiar with the Rams' scheme.
He worked under Lions coach Jim Schwartz, who was Jeff Fisher's defensive coordinator for eight years in Tennessee. And Walton worked with Fisher's son, Brandon, in Detroit in 2011.

When defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was suspended in the bounty scandal, the Rams used a coordinator-by-committee approach in 2012. St. Louis' defense improved from 22nd to 14th overall.

Fisher tried to hire Walton last season as assistant defensive coordinator/passing game, but he stayed in Detroit and got a new title, according to the report.

The Rams nearly gave the job to Ryan before both sides agreed it wasn't a fit. Then they interviewed Singletary and former Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron.

While Walton is less experienced, he'll be working with the defensive-minded Fisher and assistant head coach Dave McGinnis.

Under Walton, the Lions finished 14th in pass defense in 2012, one spot ahead of the Rams.

In 14 years of college coaching, Walton coached eight defensive backs who were drafted in the first or second round, including LaRon Landry, Kenny Phillips, Antrel Rolle and Brandon Meriweather.

We were a decent to good defense last year with a committee. Logic says this move can improve our ability to be more effective. One more piece....I like that he is relatively unknown.....

Now if we can just find someone to orchestrate offensive third down conversions (Rams one of worst in NFL) and we'll have the complete package.

.....and I read in another thread that he is related to Kroenke's wife.

Once again, I'll wait until it's official before I assume it's accurate.
