Two Rams of old below: Jon Arnett, RB for us from 1957-63. His was a popular Rams No. 26 jersey. // In the action photo below Arnett is rushing behind Rams guard Roy Hord (1960-62).

Another "less old" No. 26 - Wendell Tyler, good, reliable RB for the Rams from 1977-82. Pictured here:

What year did the NFL officially place names on back of players jerseys?

    It is a two-part answer.

A). The AFL placed the names of its players on the back of their jerseys as early as 1960, that is, not all team versions had the name. Back then a few teams even displayed the first and last name on some players! By 1961 the style was uniformized. Still, some jerseys in very early AFL pictures, i.e., 1960 games, did not have the player's name yet.

The [AFL] league’s legacy also can be seen in many of the innovations adopted by the NFL. The AFL put names on the back of players’ jerseys, made the scoreboard clock official (time had been kept on the field), offered the two-point conversion...
B). Thus, in 1970 the NFL followed this practice and style of putting the player's name on the back of his jersey, above the large numeral, the same way the AFL had started doing in 1960.

A rule imposed by the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 adopted the AFL's policy of all jerseys displaying the player's last name on the back side. This practice was not part of the NFL officially until after the merger....

1969 -- NFL 50th Anniversary. This is the special patch players wore on the left shoulder that year (only). The pass play photo below shows the Dec. 7 Vikings at Rams game where said patch is noticeable on big tackle Bob Brown; notice however, name still not placed on jersey. Same with Olsen's gear (see arrow).

1970 -- Barely visible is the letter 'G' on Gabriel's back from the picture below during the Sept. 27 game Vs. Bills (Rams win 19-0). This is the first year all NFL teams had this implemented on players jerseys.

The rest is history. And some names are hard to fit, they're just too long: Hoomanawanui (No. 88). Manumaleuna (No. 87). Hobgood-Chittick (No. 95).

Missed some '09 players. No. 9 - Keith Null, QB [09]; No. 13 - Brock Berlin, QB [07]; No. 22 - Chris Ogbonnaya, RB [09].
