    Re: Rams Jerseys Remembered, 26-50: L.A. - STL (1946 - 2010). Continued - Part II /

Les Josephson, a very reliable Rams RB played his entire NFL career with us, 1964-74 (sans '68, injured at the beginning of the year with a torn achilles tendon). He was though a gutsy, tough hombre.

LJ's jersey number was 34. During one regular season game Vs. Dallas in 1967, however, since the cowpokes were having a hard time stopping him, they grabbed on to his jersey too long and finally destroyed it. It was an away game so the trainers pulled an all-blue reserve jersey from the equipment trunk -- a clean No. 35 (no one had that number that year). No matter. Different number, same strong RB. Les kept pounding the ball against the cowgirls defense and scored a TD with his new shirt, No. 35.

Rams won that game, 35-13. 'Looks like the improvised No. 35 worked just fine.

The photo below happens to be of that particular game and that is in fact, LJ wearing the one-time jersey back-up at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. If you look closely, Cowboys LB Dave Edwards (52) is trying to shred that jersey too.

Josephson was part of a superb Rams offense that scored the most points in the NFL & AFL that year, 196 (14 games).

Flipper. Seven-year Rams WR Willie Anderson, 1988-94. 26 TDs. Well known jersey No. 83. You remember that game in '89 Vs N.O. in their house? The record setting 15 receptions, 336 yds, 1 TD! And we won in sudden death, 20-17.

...But, I'm almost positive I saw him in the 1988 Rams Guide book (his rookie year) assigned with No. 48. Will keep looking if this fine receiver did use the latter. If not, I'll remove him from this group.

Edit: Cannot find any evidence of Flipper Anderson wearing No. 48. Apparently he was assigned No. 48 during training camp in 1988 but always played with No. 83. Even his Topps rookie card displays him with this jersey. I've thus taken him off No. 48.

    Re: Rams Jerseys Remembered, 26-50: L.A. - STL (1946 - 2010). Continued - Part II /

By 1970 RB Willie Ellison (No. 33) had established himself as a dependable, productive weapon for the Rams with whom he played from 1967-72.

In 1971 he rushed for an even 1000 yards -- with an almost 5 yd avg. -- and scored 4 TDs. Also caught 32 passes for 238 yds. It was the best year of W.E.'s NFL career. He did have somewhat of a problem with fumbles though but he remains one of my memorable Rams.

Picture attached at bottom in white jersey is from the day in '71 when Ellison ran for a then NFL record 247 yds. It was at the L. A. Coliseum Vs. New Orleans, Dec. 5, when he also scored a monster 80 yarder rushing TD. It certainly helped the Rams enjoy a great win, 45-28.

Another fine No. 33 here: the great Ollie Matson, HOF RB / E / DB. Played w/the Rams 1959-62 (team traded nine players for him). Photo at far right, Matson carrying the ball during his last year with the Rams. Next to him, No. 34, is Josephson looking to throw a block; this was his first year with the Rams, an all-Ram career.

I had missed listing RB Kenneth Darby with numbers 33, 34. Also FB Mike Karney, jersey 44.
