Re: RAMS JERSEYS REMEMBERED, All-time: 2012 edition. Part I - IV

Okay, just 10 more players / jerseys to go or so here.

    - QB/RB Terry Baker played three years in the NFL, 1963-65, all L.A. Rams.

Somehow the pro-football way of life -- or better said, way of play execution -- did not match his great college football success (Heisman Trophy in 1962; 1962 Consensus All-American; Liberty Bowl MVP, 1962; S.I. Sportsman of the Year in 1962 [January 7, 1963 issue of SI shown below], etc.).

PS: Interesting ESPN article on TB and a faint paralell with Tim Tebow:
    espn.go[.com/blog/los-angeles/nfl/post/_/id/493/springer-the-l-a-rams-tebow-like-qb].

Edit: I intentionally broke the link with '[]' brackets; simply remove when pasting.

Baker retired after the '65 season. Had Rams jersey No. 11, sometimes No. 15. Clic on images below...

Re: RAMS JERSEYS REMEMBERED, All-time: 2012 edition. Part I - IV

As a postcript to the Terry Baker remembrance above, I forgot to mention that he was the 1st overall player selection of the 1963 NFL Draft (I'd say 93% of Rams fans were elated, plus 2% quite happy). ...Certainly not the first or last situation where a prime collegiate star does not fly in the fields of the pros but still, "what a difference a day makes".

A happy Rams / TB moment (attachment image). The following text is the footnote caption of the original AP press photo of 1963; verbatim:

(LA1) LOS ANGELES, March 26—TERRY’S A MEMBER OF THE RAMS NOW– Elroy Hirsch, general manager of the Los Angeles Rams, put’s a Rams helmet over the head of Oregon State University’s all-American quarterback, Terry Baker in Los Angeles after Baker signed a contract to play with the Los Angeles professional football team. Baker was the first draft choice of the Rams. Hirsch refused to discuss financial terms of Baker’s contract.

Oshiomogho Atogwe, selected by the Rams in the 3rd round of the 2005 Draft played in STL until 2010.

As a Rams FS during his rookie year he played in 12 games, finishing the year with 11 tackles, one sack, an interception, and a fumble recovery. The following season, he finished the campaign with 72 tackles and three interceptions and forced five fumbles. In the 2007 season, Atogwe had a team and NFC-high 8 interceptions along with 75 tackles and one touchdown and forced two fumbles. In the 2008 season he recorded five interceptions to lead the Rams once again. He also recorded 83 tackles and forced six fumbles.

    Jersey No. 21.

Alvin Haymond came to the L.A. Rams in 1969 and played DB for them until ’71. Haymond was a kick return specialist for the Rams those three years: 934 yards on punts and 1,600+ yards returning kickoffs, including a 98 run to the house in 1970 (captured in video below); that year he led the NFL in kickoff yardage returned. Jersey No. 23.

Re: RAMS JERSEYS REMEMBERED, All-time: 2012 edition. Part I of IV

Two L.A. Rams place kickers with a unique physical challenge: Ben Agajanian and Tom Dempsey.

Agajanian was missing part of four toes in his right foot from a work accident in his youth but that is how he played for seven different NFL and AFL teams. Dempsey was born missing half of his right foot and most of his right hand; he played for five NFL teams and set the record for the longest FG, 63 yards, in 1970 as a member of the N.O. Saints [with Dempsey it was speculated that his special kicking shoe offered him an "advantage" but this possibility was studied and it was concluded that no such thing ever happened].

Agajanian played pro football 14 years, one of which was with the Rams (1953). For his part, Dempsey played 11 years in the NFL, two of them with the Rams (1975-76). Agajanian had jersey No. 3. Dempsey donned No. 10.

Below: Ben Agajanian, left, and Tom Dempsey next three photos; one of Dempsey's kicking boots.

Re: RAMS JERSEYS REMEMBERED, All-time: 2012 edition. Part I of IV

The Roman General. One of the L.A. Rams legends and NFL MVP in 1969, Roman Gabriel was one of the first prototypes of the new big QB in the early 60s (a big QB back then was 6-4, 225/230).

Gabriel was a backup quarterback behind veteran Zeke Bratkowski in 1962-63 and then rookie Bill Munson in '64-65 -- although Gabriel did start 23 games between his first four years due to injured 1st string players -- until new HC George Allen arrived in 1966 and set the Roman warrior loose as a starter.

From there, for six consecutive years until 1971 Gabriel helped turn the Rams into a strong and winning organization with a record of 57-22-5 (NFL had no O/T until 1974 so tied games were not rare); yes the Rams D helped too but those were just terrific teams!

A fan favorite during his 10 year tenure with the Rams (1962-71), No. 18...

What!?! Did I not mention that Gabriel was a first round Draft pick in 1962 (2nd overall)? He was.
