Remember Nick Sorensen? DB with No. 41 for the Rams in 2001-02, including SB XXXVI.

With No. 47 throughout the 80s was Pro Bowl DB (both CB and S) Leroy Irvin. Irvin played for the Rams from 1980 to '89, had 34 INTs and returned them for a total of 654 yards. Also returned 147 punts for over 1,400 yards and 4 scores.

From a more vintage era we have DT Joe Repko. Repko only played four years in the NFL, a career truncated by injuries; the image below is only a mild sample of how tough it was to survive for more than several years, especially in the trenches. He used No. 42.

JR played two years with the Rams, 1948 and '49. The bighorns on the helmets were full grown.

A durable and very good RB in the mid 60s - mid 70s was Les Josephson. He played 10 years with the L.A. Rams (1964-74 [sans '68, injured]). Scored 17 TDs rushing, 11 on air attack. A fine No. 34.

Below, vs Redskins in '67: Josephson hitting the right gaps in 1st two pictures. Also, ramming ahead w/Scibelli (No. 71) & Co. Notice the textbook blocks by LT Joe Carollo and LG Tom Mack (No. 63, 65 respectively); also, center Ken Iman (50) takes on LB Sam Huff (70) to seal off left side completely for Josephson. Rams running game of back when – a play well executed.

Image below is of Nov. 12, 1967 at the L.A. Coliseum: RB Les Josephson coming right at you for a good gain after a Gabriel handoff. The OL have blocked their men out of the way (RT Charlie Cowan, far left, No. 73; LG is Tom Mack, No. 65; center Ken Iman is still on Eagles LB No. 52; at bottom left corner is probably RG Scibelli with his Eagle defender down as well).

Rams win 33-17 on their way to NFL Western Conference Champions. They also scored the most points, 398 in the NFL / AFL (14 game season). Clic on image...

'Crazylegs' played for the Rams from 1947-57, NFL Champion of '51. Member of the All 50s Team. Helped make the long pass a staple play in pro-football. HOF Class of 1968.

In a crucial game midway into the 1951 NFL season, the Los Angeles Rams found themselves trailing the Chicago Bears, 14-0, and deep in a hole on their own 9-yard line. Quarterback Bob Waterfield faked a handoff, stepped back a few paces and threw far downfield. Elroy Hirsch took off at the snap and was running full-throttle at midfield. Waterfield's pass was over his head but Elroy gathered in the ball on his fingertips and raced for a 91-yard touchdown.

The Rams went on to an important 42-17 victory. It was a patented "Elroy Hirsch special," a sizzling shocker that was repeated 17 times that year.

-- Excerpt from The NFL Pro Football HOF

Elroy 'Crazylegs' Hirsch. One terrific Rams No. 40.

TE Billy Bajema came to the Rams in 2009 as an UFA and remained until '11. Bajema was mostly a blocking TE throughout his 45 games with the Rams but caught two TDs. No. 47.

Wearing No. 47 as well with the Rams was CB Charlie Stukes. Stukes played his last two years of his NFL career with the Rams, 1973-74 and in those two seasons had 12 INTs that he returned for a total of 194 yards. Not a bad way at all to close his pro-football résumé!

Three years in the NFL. That's how long Justin Watson played RB before retiring mostly due to injuries. He only played for the Rams (1999-01) as a second string running back and on ST. Got to wear jersey No. 36 during the Super Bowl year, then No. 33.

No. 26 with the Rams from 1988-94 was DB Anthony Newman. Had 11 INTs as a Rams defender.

    - - FS Quintin Mikell played for the Rams in 2011-12.

Maybe still a possibility for Mikell to return as a FA? Hopefully.

Defensive back and kick return specialist Ron Smith played for the Rams in 1968-69. Had a combined total of six INTs and 1 TD. Also scored a 94 yard TD on a kickoff return in '68.

Sadly, Smith also passed away the first week of last month.

Ron Smith had jersey No. 41 with the Rams.

Back-up RB Carnell 'Cadillac' Williams was part of the Rams running game in 2011. This No. 33 would not leave without scoring a TD vs. whiners!
