Re: RAMS JERSEYS REMEMBERED, All-time: 2012 edition. Part II - IV

Full list is divided in 25s or, four parts. This here is II / IV

Numbers 26 through 50. What players are missing?

    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Larry Smith was one of the few rookies that Coach George Allen would hand pick and declare a keeper.

Smith was a fine RB in college (U of Florida) and became the Rams 1st round Draft selection in 1969 -- the year the Rams won their first 11 regular season games. A strong No. 38. He played in L.A. Rams until 1973 but injuries kept him from achieving as advertised.

A good FB, Joey Goodspeed had the privilege of blocking for both Marshall Faulk (2003) and Steven Jackson in 2004. Jersey No. 44. You remember Goodspeed?

Re: RAMS JERSEYS REMEMBERED, All-time: 2012 edition. Part II - IV

    - - Rams jersey No. 33.

Willie Ellison, a fine RB for the Rams since he was drafted in the 1st round of 1967 -- another of the very few rookies that HC George Allen would welcome to his team of veteran players.

Ellison had a successful tenure with the Rams. He played until 1972 and scored a total of 20 TDs rushing (including an 80 yard scamper), and contributed with 750+ yards receiving plus 6 TDs. In '71 Ellison rushed for 1,000 yards and in December of that year he broke the NFL record for yards rushed in a single game with 247 on 26 carries. He was a Pro Bowl selection that year.

Willie formed part of a very strong Rams corps of running backs of that era that included Dick Bass, Les Josephson and Larry Smith among others.

Re: RAMS JERSEYS REMEMBERED, All-time: 2012 edition. Part II - IV

    - - - - Rams No. 32, mid 70s to mid 80s.

A 2nd round Draft pick in 1973, Cullen Bryant was with the L.A. Rams until 1982. His first TD as a rookie came in September, an exciting 93 yard kickoff return vs. the whiners (the Rams won that game 40-20 in their own backyard, yeah!).

Mostly used as a blocking FB and running on short yard situations, Bryant nevertheless took the ball to the endzone 23 times either rushing or receiving. With the Rams he amassed 3,000+ yards rushing, 1,100+ receiving.

CB returned to the Rams and played three games in 1987. Sadly, in 2009 Cullen Bryant died much too early at the age of 58. Clic on images below...

    - - Dick Hoerner, RB L.A. Rams 1947-51.

Hoerner, No. 31, was part of a very strong rushing game in the late 40s - early 50s, when the Rams backfield became "bull elephants", i.e., Dan Towler, Paul Younger, and Dick Hoerner. Indeed, part of the reason they became NFL Champions in 1951.

    From a 1952 Wheaties cereal box - -

Halfback / flanker Glenn Davis only played two years in the NFL, both with the L. A. Rams during one of their more productive and successful years as an offensive powerhouse, 1950 and '51, both years reaching the championship final -- and winning in 1951.

Davis was a running back, receiver and kick return man for the Rams; even threw two TD passes in 1950. Jersey No. 41.

George Youngblood played DB a full season for the Rams in 1966. Jersey No. 45.

One of three Youngbloods that made the Rams rosters; no relation -- just Rams kindred.

    - - Rams jersey No. 47 during a short but productive NFL career.

Carver Shannon played HB and DB for the Rams three years, 1962-64 (the extent of this NFL career). During his rookie year he had 4 INTs and in '63 returned a kickoff 99 yards for a TD.

Brit Miller, a real, old school FB -- well, not too old school but played in an era when the position was not all that popular or utilized. Miller played in 2010-12, blocking and on ST. Jersey No. 49.

FB/RB Henry Dyer played for the L.A. Rams in 1966 and '68, missed entire '67 season. One of the few rookies to make the team for HC George Allen. Jersey No. 35.

Below, Dyer on a short gain play when confronted by Lions' DT Alex Karras...

RB with No.27 for the L.A. Rams in 1955 (they were once again in the NFL championship game) as well as in 1956-58 was Ron Waller. Waller was a 2nd round Draft selection by the Rams in '55. Also returned punts.

The last two years of Jim Cason's pro football career were at the L.A. Rams in 1955-56. Cason played RB / DB and returned punts.

Clic on jersey on No. 41 below:

Re: RAMS JERSEYS REMEMBERED, All-time: 2012 edition. Part II - IV

Charles White was a strong, talented RB. He was also troubled by drug demons once he entered the NFL via Cleveland Browns.

In 1985 however, he was traded to the L.A. Rams where HC John Robinson, White's college coach at USC*, really helped and supported him to become a better professional athlete (he still struggled but survived and stopped the sad situation). CW's potential was proven in 1987 when he ran for over 1,300 yards, scoring 11 TDs although he also dropped the ball eight times. White played for the Rams from 1985 to '88 with jersey No. 33.

After the 1988 season White retired and remained on the cleaner, better way of life.

*.- Heisman Trophy 1979; Rose Bowl MVP twice: 1979, '80.
