Rams Little now leaning toward playing in 2010

Rams Little now leaning toward playing in 2010

    St. Louis Post-Dispatch

INDIANAPOLIS _ At the end of the 2009 season, all signs pointed to retirement for St. Louis Rams defensive end Leonard Little.

But less than eight weeks later, Little has reconsidered. Sources close to Little have told the Post-Dispatch that the 12-year NFL veteran is now leaning toward playing in 2010. Little’s contract has expired, meaning he’s scheduled for unrestricted free agency March 5 _ or a week from Friday.

General manager Billy Devaney said Wednesday that the Rams are interested in having Little return for another season. “We are very open to the possibility of having him back,” Devaney said.

Rams executive vice president of football operations Kevin Demoff is scheduled to meet with Little’s agent here at the NFL Scouting Combine.

There could be other suitors for Little as well including Carolina, where former Rams defensive line coach Brian Baker now works. Little’s permanent residence is in Charlotte, N.C., home of the Panthers. And keep an eye on Washington, where former Rams defensive coordinator and interim head coach Jim Haslett now works.

Little made $2.5 million last season, a figure that included a roster bonus. No matter who signs Little, the price probably would have to be reasonable. And at age 35, Little’s best value these days is as a situational pass rusher, not an every down player. That likely would be his role with the Rams next season if he returns to St. Louis. Coach Steve Spagnuolo has had a couple of phone conversations with Little since the end of the season.

Although he’s not the player he was, say, five years ago, Little remained the Rams’ top pass rusher in ‘09. He finished with a team-high 6 1/2 sacks even though he missed the final three games of the season with a knee infection.

If he'll play for a salary commensurate with his current abilities, I would think he's be welcomed back. He's been in St. Louis his entire career, and likely would prefer to finish it with the Rams unless another team throws crazy money at him. When healthy, he's still our best pass rusher ..

Id love to have him back, gives us yet another veteran pass rusher, and another veteran leader on our defense. Id like to see us keep him, grab another later round pass rusher like an Austin Lane in the fourth if he falls that far (unless Brandon Graham is there at the top of the second). Bring in all the pass rushing specialists we can!

I don't know? I think it's time to move onward and upward. Thanks for the memories.

It would be good news if Little decides to come back for one more year because he don't have much in the way of depth at the position right now. We absolutely need to be planning for the future without him regardless of whether he comes back, but his presence would help us stay competitive through the transition.

Hello he finished with a team-high 6 1/2 sacks!!! I guess you don't really know...I hope he does come back and stays healthy. I always really liked Little and am looking forward to at least one more year.

Re: Rams Little now leaning toward playing in 2010

LL should have one more year left in him for the Rams. He surely wouldn't want to end his career on a sour note with the 1-15 record the Rams produced in 2009. Hopefully both parties involved (Rams & Little) can come to agree to a fair deal for the sake of the team. Little now leaning towards playing in 2010 is a positive sign for the Rams!

I don't view him as a 3 down player any longer. Especially not in the system that we run where it requires players to be more physical and play more than one position on the line. I wouldn't mind seeing him come back as a 3rd down pass rusher or some sort of situational rusher, but how much do you pay a 35 year old to come play part time?

    Hopefully not that much.
