Rams are loaded with contenders at DB

    By Kathleen Nelson
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    05/04/2006

All of a sudden, the Rams have a crowded house in the defensive backfield.

They used their first-round draft pick to select Tye Hill, a cornerback from Clemson. They signed Fakhir Brown to a five-year, $12 million contract in March. Jerametrius Butler and Travis Fisher, the starting tandem in 2004, have completed rehab and are ready to reclaim their spots.

At some point, something's gotta give, but DeJuan Groce expects to remain in the mix. The Rams selected Groce in the fourth round of the 2003 draft and recently signed him to a one-year contract for $721,000.

"There's competition every year," Groce said. "Last year, they brought Ron Bartell in. It's always like that. You're always fighting to get the starting position. That's good. It gets us better every year."

Bartell was expected to challenge for a starting job, but Groce started 15 games in place of Butler, with 39 solo tackles and two interceptions. Bartell was inactive for the first five games but eventually replaced Fisher as a starter on the other corner.

"I think they'll do a good job of getting everybody in," he said.

    Cockeyed optimist

Rams players gave a unanimous thumbs-up Wednesday to the team's draft, as expected. Extra weight should be given to the opinion of safety Corey Chavous, who served as an analyst for the NFL network.

"I thought they did great," Chavous said. "Why would I say anything else about the Rams?"

Chavous said he has followed the draft since childhood, when his uncle, Barney Chavous, was in the league as a defensive lineman with the Denver Broncos.

Chavous said of Hill: "I think he'll be a pretty good player from Day One. He's one of those guys who has been in a lot of man-to-man situations before. He showed in the Senior Bowl he can match up against bigger guys."

    Doughnut Brothers

    round into form

Guard Adam Timmerman (knee) and center Andy McCollum (shoulders, knee) continue on the road to recovery. McCollum started running last week and expects to be "close enough" to 100 percent to participate in offseason training activities, OTAs for short, which start May 16. Timmerman said he has "been cleared to do pretty much anything" and "could beat Andy in a race."

Hill is going to be fighting his height for his entire career. And in the NFL West, I've already heard numerous times how "there's no chance" of Hill covering Boldin, Fitzgerald, Bryant, Jackson, Burleson, even rookie Vernon Davis (not sure what a corner is doing on a TE, but okay).

But the fact is, he has spent the past three years covering receivers taller than him and he's done just fine. It's not like these receivers are the first 6 foot wideouts he's faced up against.

He's a solid man-up defender which is a must if a team is going to be an agressive blitzing unit. We haven't had the man-up corners in the past few years to do it, but with Hill we may be one step closer. Haslett loves to apply pressure, so Hill may be more valuable than even his 5'9" frame would lead some to believe.

Don't laugh, they both run a 4.5 forty.

Yea, you could probably time their 40's with a sun dial.

Now, back to the secondary. It's at least refreshing knowing that going into training camp, a WR is not challenging for a starting position in the secondary.

    DBs GALORE! :clanram:

Jeramitrius Butler / Ron Bartell, CB.
Travis Fisher / Tye Hill / Fakir Brown / De Juan Groce, CB

Jerome Carter / Atogwe Oshiomogho, SS

Plus some on ST coverage assignments.

Not sure about Deandre Eiland S, if he makes the team.

Rumor is Fisher won't be wearing the Horns come August.
