Rams Mean Business (From Pro Football Weekly)

Brown, Bartell signings show Rams mean business
    By Dan Arkush
    March 6, 2009

Our Rams sources tell us the buzz couldn’t be more positive in St. Louis following the surprisingly aggressive free-agent signing of ex-Raven Jason Brown, who was widely considered the best center available in the open market, and the re-signing of CB Ron Bartell, who we hear made the Rams’ brain trust more than a little nervous with his visit to New Orleans before inking a four-year deal that could reach $28 million if all the incentives are met. Team insiders tell us Bartell, who previously had been turned off by the fact that he never had any contact at all with departed GM Jay Zygmunt, was swept off his feet by new head coach Steve Spagnuolo, who went out of his way to let the cornerback know how much he was counting on Bartell to be a team leader, both on and off the field. Finding a new locker-room leader to replace the departed Corey Chavous is an underrated need for the Rams, and it’s one that Bartell appears ready to embrace. “Me and Corey Chavous were just having a discussion about it last season at the end of the year,” Bartell said in a special press conference after his signing. “He had put it on me. He pretty much told me that a lot of guys have respect for what I’m doing, so it may be time for me to step up more and be more of a vocal guy. … When they invest this kind of money in you, I think it’s your duty to take a leadership role.”

I Don't know if Ron Bartell will be a big leader next season, the role that Corey Chavous had will be hard to replace... Even though Bartell has earned the respect he deserves, I can see him as a leader toward the end of the season.

the leaders who can take the job: Pisa because he a vet. who understand the team, or witherspoon. I want Bartell to fill in that Position to be a leader. . .

    GO BARTELL!!!!!

If the Rams mean Business, Then why do we still have the same team
that 3 other coaches failed with? I guess were to believe Spags can turn
    it around with a center????..

The Chargers only have signed one player as well but they have been a great team.
They only need one or two players.

We have won 5 games In two years with this team!.

    I just don't seem to understand some of you who believe this team needs to change all 53 players on the roster. And before you say that is not what you mean, then reread your posts. This team took several years to get into the shape it is in and can not be turned around overnight. The organization is stuck with some of these players for the next year or two and some of you will need to just get over it. This team will be forced to make incrimental improvements every year. It can be done in the following three ways;
    1. Better drafts. No more reaches for projects (Canidate, Crouch, Thomas)
    2. Free agency. Brown's signing reminds me of the Timmerman signing. A player on his way up instead of one who is on his way down.
    3. Better coaching. Fear is a great motivator. I believe this time the team has the right people in place to honestly evaluate the players and provide better coaching.

It will take a while before we can honestly evaluate this new group running the orgainization but the signs are very promising.

Its March 6. What did you expect the team to do thus far?

They have secured their own FAs (Atogwe, Bartell, Adeyanju, Incognito), signed a top FA (Brown), and made an offer to a FA who would come in as a starter (Butler). Clearly, they are not done yet. There are still FAs out there, and the Rams will be in a position to spend more once the situations with Holt and Pace are resolved. Oh, there's also this thing called the draft.

September is still several months away.

Miami and Atlanta did pretty well by making a few personnel changes and probably most importantly, bringing in a new leadership group with the right plan and attitude. The Rams are not done making moves by a long shot and once the pieces are in place, along with fielding a healthy team, I see no reason why they can't turn the corner under Spags leadership. I certainly like what I've seen so far.

Yes, I get the concept on the draft, the fa's, and the other. Right now we
are just like the Raiders. New coach, new coach, new coach. One player
this year, one player the next. "Rebuild!" or we will spend the next 5
years like the last 5 years.

Miami and Atlanta? How do you think they will do next year?
they are the "surprise team", so no body competes with them, so they win games.
Both of them wont make the playoffs this year.

Miami made more than a few personnel changes. Parcells cleaned house.
