Rams Might Trade Pick: Stop the Presses!

Rams Might Trade Pick: Stop the Presses!

It was odd how an obvious general comment by Rams general manager Billy Devaney led to headlines on stories and scrolls on ESPN.

At the end of the team’s recent minicamp, Devaney was asked whether the team would consider scenarios where they could be enticed to trade the second overall pick in the draft, which the team owns for the second consecutive year.

In reality, it would have been surprising and headline-grabbing if Devaney had boldly come out and said the pick wasn’t for sale; that there’s no way he would ever deal it. Of course, he didn’t say that. No one ever would.

What he said was, “Yeah, in the position we’re in, we’ll consider everything. It’s a little early. We kind of play with scenarios in our mind right now, but we haven’t gotten down to the nitty-gritty, if you will, to say, ‘OK, how far back would we trade?’ We’re going to be open to all possibilities, but we haven’t started to really finalize and say, ‘We’d be willing to go back this far and that’s it.’ So we’re working towards that point, but we’re far from that point right now.”

When asked if “the phone lines are open,” Devaney said, “They’re always open. But they’re open for everybody, and ours certainly will be open.”

Exactly. Every team looks at every possibility before making a final decision. Yet, Devaney’s benign comment produced headlines where it was proclaimed the Rams would consider dealing the choice. As if that’s groundbreaking.

Last year, the Rams were in discussions with several teams, including the Ravens, who were hoping to move ahead of Atlanta and select quarterback Matt Ryan. However, Devaney didn’t want to move down to the eighth spot in the draft, and Baltimore’s offer wasn’t good enough to make the move.

Baltimore end up trading down to No. 26 with Houston, then traded back up to 18 with Jacksonville and selected quarterback Joe Flacco.

The Rams chose defensive end Chris Long with the second overall pick. What Devaney and everyone realizes is the top handful of picks are difficult to deal because teams are reluctant to trade up, giving up extra choices and having to pay more in guaranteed money for those supposed premium selections.

It remains unlikely that the Rams would make a deal. One of the biggest misconceptions is that there are anywhere from eight-to-10 offensive tackles in this draft that are close to each other, making it a good chance one would be there for the Rams with their second-round pick.

The reality is that Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe the best tackles in the draft. They are rated third and fourth, respectively by NFLDraftScout.com. There is a dropoff to Michael Oher (12th) and Andre Smith (13th), and Smith is likely not even on the Rams’ board. After Oher, there is another drop to Eben Britton (29th) and William Beatty (44th). The next tackles in their rankings are Jamon Meredith (61st) and Phil Loadholt (66th).

Even if the Rams would feel comfortable with Britton or Loadholt in the second round, there’s no guarantee they will be there. Last year, some tackles were pushed into the late first round because teams figured they wouldn’t be able to get them in the next round. There were eight tackles selected in the first round and none in round two.

It’s why there can be no other pick in the first round for the Rams than a tackle.

    PICKING DATES

The NFL will announce the 2009 schedule Tuesday at 6 pm. NFL Network and ESPN will devote a special show to the schedule. That says all you need to know about the NFL, and its popularity.

The Rams have decided to hold training camp at their Russell Training Center. The team’s first preseason game against the Jets will be anywhere from Thursday, Aug. 13 to Saturday, Aug. 15. Teams can’t start practice for veterans more than 15 days before the first game, so the first camp practice is expected to be July 31 if the first game is Aug. 15. If the game is earlier, then camp would begin one or two days sooner.

Only two dates are known for the preseason: the team’s game in Cincinnati will be Thursday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 Central time. The Governor’s Cup game at home against Kansas City will be Thursday, Sept. 3.

I loathe ESPN. I wish Fox would put a national network on tv instead of all the regional stuff. ESPN at one time in the late 80's early 90's was fantastic. Now, it's just garbage.

Couldn't disagree more. And hopefully Devaney sees it that way too.

Does any team really want to over-pay for potential when possibly several postions can be upgraded with the about the same money with lower picks?

Unless a player seems to be so much better than the rest it's a crapshoot, and even then things aren't always what they seem.
