Rams Notebook: Defensive linemen visit Rams

    By Jim Thomas

In the midst of final draft preparations, the Rams have been trying to improve their defensive line depth. Veteran defensive tackles Grady Jackson and Jason Fisk paid free-agent visits to Rams Park this week.

The Rams have had contract talks with both players, and one of the two could be signed before the draft. Both players are being looked at as rotation players. Signing either one probably wouldn't affect the team's draft plans. At the moment, La'Roi Glover and Jimmy Kennedy are the only defensive tackles on the roster with any appreciable NFL experience.

Jackson, 33, has spent the past 2 1/2 seasons with Green Bay. At this stage of his career, he is most effective when used about 30-35 plays per game. Chronic knee problems usually result in Jackson not practicing near the end of the year. His weight can been an issue; he played at about 350 pounds last season. But even with that bulk, Jackson has a quick first step and is a surprisingly good pass rusher in addition to being a good run stuffer.

Fisk, 33, who played last season for Cleveland, also was scheduled to visit New Orleans this week. At this stage of his career Fisk is best when used as a situational player on first and second down. Cleveland was forced to use him more often last season, and he wore down as the season progressed. He's a nose tackle, but at 6-3, 300, gets by more on technique than power.

    Rams sign four

Wide receivers Kevin Curtis and Shaun McDonald, cornerback DeJuan Groce and defensive end Brandon Green have signed one-year tender offers from the Rams as restricted free agents. Curtis' one-year contract was for $1.57 million; the contracts for McDonald, Groce, and Green were for $721,000.

    Martin to Saints

Quarterback Jamie Martin, who was 3-1 as a starter for the Rams last season, has signed a two-year free-agent contract with New Orleans. Contract terms weren't immediately available. Martin also drew interest from Cincinnati, Seattle, and Miami. Martin, 36, had several stints with the Rams dating to 1993 when the team was in Los Angeles. He will back up Drew Brees.

    Play dough

Cornerback-kick returner Chris Johnson, who played for the Rams last season, signed a two-year $940,000 free-agent contract with Kansas City. ... Offensive lineman Todd Steussie's one-year contract with the Rams is for $850,000, including a $40,000 signing bonus.

I'd like to see Green have more playing time this year. I think he's got a great motor, and would be a good situational pass rusher.
