Rams notebook: Green has a milestone season

    By Bill Coats
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    Wednesday, Dec. 28 2005

The conclusion of the season Sunday night will mean something a bit different
for defensive end Brandon Green than for most of his Rams teammates.

Barring a late-week practice mishap, Green will complete a full NFL season for
the first time. A broken kneecap limited him to three games over two seasons
after Jacksonville drafted him in the sixth round in 2003. He feared that
another injury-blunted season might earn him a dubious label.

"If I didn't stay healthy this year, that might've been it," said Green, 25.
"They'll kind of throw it out that, 'This guy can't stay healthy.'"

The Rams signed him in May as a free agent. He beat out several contenders to
earn a backup role behind Anthony Hargrove on the right side. Green has played
in all 15 games, with one start (Nov. 20 vs. Arizona).

"He's been very, very productive for us," interim head coach Joe Vitt said.
"He's a versatile guy that can rush the passer, and for his size he can play
the run fairly well. He's a pleasant surprise."

Green knows something about beating the odds. A diabetic, Green gives himself
regular injections and has learned to regulate his blood sugar with energy
    drinks during practices and games.

Green's 30 tackles include three sacks; only Leonard Little (seven), Hargrove
(4 1/2), Jimmy Kennedy (four) and Adam Archuleta (3 1/2) have more.

    Carter is out

The Rams' bulging injured-reserve list grew to double figures Wednesday. Rookie
strong safety Jerome Carter (foot) became the 10th player whose season was cut
short. Free-agent safety Dwaine Carpenter, 6-1 and 203, took Carter's spot on
the 53-man roster. Carpenter, 29, played in 30 games, with eight starts, over
the past two years for San Francisco. He was released Sept. 19.
