Rams notebook: T. Faulk fails physical exam after surgery, gets released

    By Bill Coats
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    Thursday, Jul. 27 2006

Trev Faulk, who started five games at middle linebacker last season for the
Rams, found out Wednesday how harsh the business side of professional football
    can be.

Faulk, who underwent surgery May 5 for a herniated disc in his back, failed his
physical exam and was released. Faulk said he was disappointed but not
    surprised.

"I knew it was a possibility," said Faulk, who will turn 25 on Aug. 6. "I was
kind of hoping they'd put me on the PUP list. But things happen, and you've
just got to roll with the punches."

Had the Rams designated Faulk as "physically unable to perform," he would've
been eligible to return to the roster after six weeks of the regular season.
Now, his NFL future is uncertain.

"My rehab was going really well," said Faulk, a four-year NFL veteran out of
Louisiana State. "I was really pushing myself, trying to get back in time for
training camp, and I kind of had a setback. That hurt my chances."

    The 6-foot-3, 254-pound Faulk collected a career-high 40 tackles on defense in
2005 and also was busy on special teams, where he had 16 stops.

    M. Faulk goes on list

That other Faulk - Marshall - has been placed on the PUP list, according to
league sources. That was basically a formality, as Faulk is scheduled for major
knee surgery and will be sidelined for the season.

The Rams head into training camp practices today minus No. 28 for the first
    time since 1999.

"It's going to seem funny without him," defensive end Leonard Little said. "He
was one of the big reasons why we won a Super Bowl. ... He's helped me a lot as
a player and as a person. I'm going to miss him a whole lot."

Steven Jackson, who succeeded Faulk last year as the team's primary running
back, said: "No one wanted to see him go. But health is first, and Marshall has
to take care of himself. I hate that he can't be here ... but I think we do
    move on."

    Two more sign

The Rams have signed two more draft picks: tight end Joe Klopfenstein of
Colorado, a second-round choice, and linebacker Jon Alston of Stanford, a
third-rounder. Klopfenstein received a four-year deal, and Alston signed for
three years. Financial terms were not disclosed.

That left only first-round pick Tye Hill, a cornerback from Clemson, unsigned
when the team checked in at Rams Park on Wednesday.

Also added was defensive end Matthew Rice, an undrafted rookie from Penn State
who signed a one-year contract. Rice, 6-3 and 265, spent part of the offseason
with the Buffalo Bills before being released.

    Curtis will get chance

Coach Scott Linehan plans to audition speedy wideout Kevin Curtis as a kickoff
returner during camp. That's just fine with Curtis, a fourth-year pro from Utah
    State.

"I tried it a little bit in college, but they didn't use me much back there.
So, it's something new," Curtis said. "It's another opportunity to touch the
ball and get on the field. So, I'm all for it."

    Ram-blings

Linehan said he expects all his personnel to be ready for full-go workouts
today. "We're really in pretty good shape overall, as far any injury issues
being carried over from last year or anything from the spring," he said. ...
The first of the Rams' four preseason games is Aug. 10 vs. Indianapolis at the
    Edward Jones Dome.

I hope he catches on else where, except for the NFC west.
I wounder if they will be targeting a vet LB to fill his spot.

I can see Trev Faulk returning once his injury heals, but its odd they didnt place him on IR or the PUP list.

Also, i like the idea of Curtis on KR, he has shown good ability with the ball when on End arounds and after the catch, so its very possible he could do well.
