Rams previous trades nearing the NFL draft
In 1999 we landed Marshal Faulk for a 2nd rounder and a 5th rounder
In 2001, we landed Aaneas Williams for a 2nd rounder and I believe a 6th rounder.
Those trades helped soldify those rosters during the offseason bringing in proven talent for measely draft picks.
What I am trying to get at, is that this current St.Louis Rams team is missing a current leader somewhere that can come in and provide a spark that we're missing...
I want you guys to come up with a player that you think will benefit our ballclub.

Re: Rams previous trades nearing the NFL draft
I'd rather not trade away any picks for another aging veteran. We are an old team, trading away our draft picks would just ensure that we remain mediocre for many years.

Re: Rams previous trades nearing the NFL draft
I understand your point about Aeneas and Faulk. I also agree we need to build with youth. However if we can get a talent like Aeneas that can be a leader I would definently make that same trade again and give up a second rounder. There are no sure fire picks in the draft.

Re: Rams previous trades nearing the NFL draft
As I watch the 2001 super bowl on NFL network, an interesting thought comes to mind. In both 99 and 01, we traded a couple picks for a spark to raise us to championship levels. In 01, everyone knew we had the talent and the players to do it, but what about 99? The roster had to have been underachieving to go from dump to champions, much like our roster now. What's my point? It's conceivable that if we found a spark player(probably on defense) and had a solid draft, we could turn this around and be a contender. The key would be the maturation of the offensive line, but hey, anything's possible in the NFC West!

Re: Rams previous trades nearing the NFL draft
If I had a player to chose that the Rams could go out and get, it would be Jonathan Vilma of the New York Jets. I know he is available, and it probably could be done with a second or third rounder. Vilma is still a young stud, but he does not fit into the Jets defensive scheme. They have publicized that they are shopping him. That would be a great pick up in my opinion.

Re: Rams previous trades nearing the NFL draft
We had Adam Archuleta and Aeneas Williams they where both doing good for us at the time our biggest problem was DL. Kennedy 6'4 320 was ranked by some at the time as the best DL in the draft. Here is some snipits from 2003.
Defensive Tackles
1. Jimmy Kennedy, Penn St.
2. Jonathon Sulivan, Georgia
3. DeWayne Robertson, Kentucky
4. Ty Warren, Texas A&M
5. William Joseph, Miami
6. Kevin Williams, Oklahoma St.
7. Dan Klecko, Temple
8. Jarrett Johnson, Alabama
9. Rien Long, Washington St.
10. Tyler Brayton, Colorado
2003 DT's
1. Dewayne Robertson, Kentucky
2. Jimmy Kennedy, Penn St.
3. William Joseph, Miami (FL)
4. Johnathan Sullivan, Georgia
5. Kevin Williams, Oklahoma St.
6. Kenny Peterson, Ohio St.
7. Ty Warren, Texas A&M
8. Rien Long, Washington St.
9. Nick Eason, Clemson
10. Anthony Adams, Penn St.
Kennedy was getting double-teamed all the time, and he still finished with five sacks. He's a monster at 6-foot-4 and 330 pounds.
Kennedy was named a first team All-America by The NFL Draft Report, The Sporting News, and Walter Camp and third-team honors from the Associated Press. A four-year starter at Penn State University, Kennedy was named the 2002 Big Ten Defensive Lineman-of-the-Year and was a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection. A semifinalist for the Lombardi Award, Kennedy finished his career with 213 tackles, 14 sacks, and 39 tackles-for-loss. Kennedy also played basketball for the Nittany Lions for one year.
Early Mock Drafts:
7. Seattle - Jimmy Kennedy, DT, Penn St.
This is close between Kennedy and Miami defensive tackle William Joseph, but I give the nod to Kennedy because of his size. From watching a couple of games this season he seems to be a better all around player. Seattle needs help to stop the run and to get younger at this position.
7. Minnesota Vikings - Jimmy Kennedy, DT Penn State
The Vikings need a lot of help on defense, and cornerback Marcus Trufant is a big possibility, but with the signing of Denard Walker via free agency, I think they'll take the best available defensive lineman and grab a corner later on the first day. Kennedy and Chris Hovan would be a disruptive force on the inside.
My Summary:
1. We took him at #12 it was not a reach and DL was a position of need.
2. SS at the time did not look like a position of need.
3. Between the #12 pick Kennedy and the # 16 pick Palamalu there was the following DL taken Ty Waren(NE), Michael Haynes(Chi), and Jerome Mc Dougle(Phi). Of those three only New England with Ty Waren did better then the Rams
Chicago and Phily got less out of the two plaers they picked. So does that mean their players where as big if not bigger bust. I wonder why they did not go with the sure pick hummm.
So IMO while some of us may have had concerns it was not perceived as a bad pick at the time. Hindsight is great.Last edited by RamsSB99; -01-30-2008 at 02:36 AM.

Re: Rams previous trades nearing the NFL draft
of that list, only ty warren, kevin johnson, and maybe dewayne robertson have done anything in the NFL. we made the smart pick, but unfortunatly it never worked out with Jimmy.
