Rams Re-Sign QB Kellen Clemens, Per Report

    Ryan Van Bibber

The St. Louis Rams re-signed veteran backup quarterback Kellen Clemens on Thursday, according to a report from Mike Garafolo at USA Today who cites sources close the quarterback. The move raises a few questions for the Rams and their roster going forward.

Update: The Rams confirmed the move to TST. DT Darell Scott was released to clear up the roster spot, so they are keeping three quarterbacks.

The team has not yet confirmed the move, so take this all with a grain of salt. Garafolo was a New York/New Jersey beat guy before recently going to USA Today, so it stands to reason that he would have a few connections to the former Jets quarterback and his agent.

Finances is one benefit of the move. By cutting Clemens at the 53-man roster deadline, the Rams were not on the hook for a guaranteed salary of $700,000. His salary going forward is not guaranteed.

Signing Clemens means the team needs to make a corresponding roster move, which raises the question of Austin Davis' status. Will they attempt to move him to the practice squad and carry only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster? Remember, to move a player from the active roster to the practice squad the Rams would have to place him on waivers and hope he goes unclaimed.

They could also keep three quarterbacks and find another player on the roster to move. It is notable that they have five running backs on the roster right now, which some would consider a little high, but maybe not for a run-first team.

Interesting move. Are the Rams worried about Bradford's health, given the OL nightmare?

Clemens always seems to get the short end of the stick. I remember a few years ago on "Hard Knocks", the Jets called him into the office and said they wanted to keep him, but couldn't because of his salary, then offered him a lot less money to stay, which be begrudgingly accepted. In this case, I guess he should feel lucky to have a job.

Is Brockers coming back sooner than we were told?

I remember that one too, he went home and thought about, he was not a happy camper. To me it shows the Rams new regime runs a better business, why pay him his old salary when they knew that they could cut him and resign at better terms.

I said all along that the Rams would release a DT, as there was no way they would continue to carry six DTs. I just thought it would be when Pettis returns.

Even with releasing Scott, the team still has Brockers, Langford, Cudjo, Conrad and Heard
