Per Jim Thomas' twitter...Hopefully they can find a way to re-sign him like they did last year.

Yes, I quickly realized my mistake.

Well, the Rams have just created a hole where there wasn't one. Let's see how they plan on filling it. Maybe this is the first step in getting OJ signed to a more reasonable long-term deal, or maybe they're going in a different direction.

Hope BD has something up his sleeve. We already have a need at SS, now we are going to have a need at BOTH safety positions?

    Cmon man!

We should be able to restructure his deal. He does seem like the team player who's willing to get paid for a reasonable amount. (I hope)

Since the Rams released him, there is no more deal to restructure. They'd have to sign him to a brand new deal, but O.J. is now free to sign with someone else if he wants.

Damn more holes on D. And I thought we were a player or two away from having a truly solid Defense. Lets hope its a calculated risk.

    Interesting...

To me, this is quite a gamble. Or perhaps they realize that the CBA mediation is more than likely going nowhere, and thus, free agency will cease to exist, giving them time to restructure Atogwe's contract. I'm hoping that's the case; that's at least how I understand it. If that's correct, it's pretty smart on the Front Office's part, but hopefully Atogwe won't be fed up by this point. I would've preferred we pay him just out of respect.

That's not really how it works. The CBA situation only affects players who have played through the final year of their contract and are scheduled to hit free agency because their contract has expired. They cannot sign with a new team until a new CBA is reached and a new free agency period begins.

Atogwe, however, was under contract and the Rams decided to release him prior to paying him a big roster bonus next week. Since he was released by his club, he's officially a free agent and can sign with anyone as of right now. He's not in limbo due to the CBA situation.

There is no longer a deal for the Rams to restructure; they released him, thus terminating the contract completely. They could still re-sign him, but it would be a brand new deal, one that anyone in the league is now able to sign him to.

Quite intriguing indeed... I think this is one of those 50-50 chance to resign a player such as OJ.

I don't like this move. Atogwe wasn't a great player, but he was a lot better than he was given credit by most people in this league. I don't see him resigning either, I know I would be turned off by a team signing me to a big contract to just release me before the bonus was due.
