    Rams release Chris Massey ....

Apparently a cap move with the new LS doing well.

    Here is more:

    Longtime long snapper Massey released

    BY JIM THOMAS
    Monday, August 22, 2011

Chris Massey, a seventh-round draft pick in 2002 who had been the Rams' longest-tenured player, has been released by the team, league sources confirmed Monday.

Massey, who turned 32 Sunday, had appeared in 135 regular-season games for St. Louis. Over the course of his NFL career, Massey had made clean snaps on 1,050 of 1,051 attempts.

But the Rams signed another long snapper, undrafted rookie Jake McQuaide of Ohio State, once the lockout lifted and the two have been competing in camp and alternating snaps during preseason games.

The job, obviously, now belongs to McQuaide who counts about $1 million less against the salary cap than Massey's $1.375 million cap count.
Wow. Massey has been virtually perfect and a long snapper is such an important team component. I understand needing to save money, but an ineffective long snapper can have disasterous consequences. I hope McQuaide works out. I wish Massey the best of luck and an enormous amount of thanks.

Big time cap savings. You can get a solid veteran for $1M.

No doubt, but a few bad snaps can cost you a few games. Just ask the 2010 Chargers.

First it was the equipment manager and now this? What are they thinking? Man, they are really cleaning house!

In all seriousness, Chris has been a very stable presence in an otherwise very unstable environment. Obviously, as pointed out above, he is a cap casualty. I can only wish him the best. Hopefully, he won't be missed. Good luck, Mr. Massey!

I am a big chris massey fan. I have always loved the long snappers. However, i don't care what anyone says, his snap in the carolina playoff game on the long field goal attempt by Money was just a little bit off timing wise and it let to Money coming up a couple of yards short even though the kick was dead on.

    Ramming speed to all

By my count that leaves around 12 players left from the pre spags era.
    Bartell
    Jackson
    Avery
    Chamberlain
    D. Jones
    J. Brown
    Bell
    Ah you
    Goldberg
    Hall
    Long
    King

Massey you will be missed. Best long snapper in the league hands down

If only he was willing to restructure his contract but I can't blame either him or the Rams for him. This guy was perfect and I hope McQuaide doesn't make Josh Brown look like Nate Kaeding in postseason form.

When he notified Massey, Spags reportedly said:

"You're 6 foot nothin', 200 and nothin', and you have barely a speck of athletic ability. And you hung in there with the best pro football players in the land for 9 years. And you're gonna walk outta here with a few million dollars in earnings. In this life, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody but yourself. And after what you've gone through, if you haven't done that by now, it ain't gonna never happen."

Another on a soon-to-grow list of familiar names it will be hard not to feel a pang of sentiment about, Vobora being the first. I think Chamberlain could be next. There's been a lot of talk about how vet ST specialists without positional upside will find it harder to hold on to a job this year because of the new kick-off rule,no? Gotta find spots for the guys who have flashed potential in areas of need. Which would you rather have? Jabara Williams and J. Nelson, for egs, or another year of Massey or Chamberlain?

Spags learned a lot from his days working as a groundskeeping assistant didn't he?

Re: Rams release Chris Massey ....

Clearly another case of spag's inferiority complex!

Massey was a great long snapper, but perhaps his downfield coverage skills were beginning to decline? Sure this is just conjecture, heck I don't even know if the Rams have their long snapper cover, but it looks like a situation of the young up and comer thats bigger, faster, and stronger taking less pay to do the same job as the vet. It's an ugly part of life, an ugly part of the NFL.

    Isn't that the truth!

    A thankful salute to CMassey.
