There is much more to this story. Jeff f is notorious for sticking with a player....Dumbear must have really pissed him off.

To be honest writing was kinda on the wall for this one, inspite of how well he did last year for us. Going youth soon as they are ready and we have spoon's experiance to fill in this gap. If you think about it in this way it makes some sense. Good Luck to Jo Lonn I am sure he will be picked up...

I'm surprised but not shocked. He was only going to be a two down LB with Tree on the team. Maybe we go out and get another vet to shore up the LBs.

We are young really young at LBs now.

Fisher must like Ray Ray as much as the rest of us, not to mention Hull, Bates and Stewart.
Wonder if a released player can be picked up while on suspension? Or maybe it was the PF against Baltimore.
    In any case, pretty surprising.

The cap savings is $1.3 million salary $1.3M dead money $500k. The Sims deal and this move most likely gets us well within our cap space for the season.

Vegas, Mr. Hull was cut sometime last week. He is gone..

IMHO this just may be a gambit by Fish/Snead to enable them to resign Dunbar without having to guarantee his contract since he is a veteran.

I get that the Rams are moving on with the youth and all but let's not get carried away with it. Dunbar sure as heck ain't an old guy and he is coming off a career year. I hope that Fish sees it that way and resigns him much like they did with Kellen Clemons last year.

Dunbar must of pissed off Fisher something fierce because you do not cut a player after the year Dunbar had. Wow im kind of shocked because Dunbar brought toughness. WONDER IF THIS LEADS US TO BRING IN A TAKEO SPIKES AS WELL( AFTER WEEK 2 SO NOT GUSRNETEED CONTRACT), IM NOT SOLD ON WITHERSPOON AT ALL...

As Rambos mentioned, "we are young really young at LBs now" except for Laurinaitis and Witherspoon who now have an even greater role as mentors and leaders! I think Ray Ray will be fine. As for Dumbar, he has really paid a high price, one that probably no one saw coming*.

Coach Fisher is the antithesis of George Allen, a head coach who preferred veteran grunts over very young players and rookies (save a few hand selected exceptions).

Re: BREAKING: Rams release LB Dunbar

There's gotta be something more going on here. If it was for the PED test, he would have been cut to make room for another rookie. They wouldn't have waited until after the 2nd cut. I'm going to assume they've got a good reason for doing it the week before the seasons starts.

Might see another high draft pick spent on a LB next year.

I'm honestly shocked, couldn't have even imagined seeing this coming after the year he had last year. While I do hope there are plans which involve his return, I'm not questioning the move by any means because I have full faith in our coaching staff and front office.

Re: BREAKING: Rams release LB Dunbar

By Howard Balzer for KSDK Sports

(KSDK Sports) -- Rams coach Jeff Fisher wasn't pleased when linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar was suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing drugs.

Tuesday, we learned just how disappointed when they terminated Dunbar's contract just as he is beginning his suspension.

Dunbar was set to be the team's starting strong-side linebacker when the suspension came down. He played on the weak side last season, and stayed on the field in passing situations where he struggled at times.

The selection of Alec Ogletree in the first round of the draft resulted in Dunbar switching sides, and Ogletree is expected to stay on the field in the nickel defense.

With Dunbar's suspension looming, the Rams signed Will Witherspoon on July 22, and he quickly became the starter on the strong side. The development of rookie free agents Ray Ray Armstrong, Daren Bates and Jonathan Stewart also likely contributed to the decision to part ways with Dunbar.

Bates is the backup to Witherspoon, while Stewart is the backup in the middle behind James Laurinaitis and Armstrong is Ogletree's backup.

With Dunbar released, his $1.3 million salary is wiped off the books, although he was already losing over $300,000 during the suspension. The remaining $994,000 won't count against the Rams' salary cap, although they will be charged $500,000 for the proration from the $1 million signing bonus he received in 2012. The Rams are also subject to a fine of about $102,000 because Dunbar was the team's third player suspended in this calendar year.

Re: BREAKING: Rams release LB Dunbar

I am happy with Witherspoon being back. I think there is something to say about a team being too young. Obviously, there were disciplinary issues with Dunbar. I hope Ray Ray can settle down as well because at times I can see his young overzealous behavior causing unnecessary penalties.
