Rams Report: Avery arrives 10 pounds heavier
Kathleen Nelson | Posted: Friday, July 30, 2010 5:55 pm |
Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery checked into camp Friday about 10 pounds heavier than he did last year. On purpose. Avery put on the extra weight in an effort to improve his durability.
"I'm trying to get the weight but keep the speed as well," he said.
Putting on the pounds was tough at first, he said, "until I realized I only ate one meal a day. Once I started eating three meals, I got to 10 pounds pretty easy."
At a relatively chunky 193, Avery expects a spirited battle at wide receiver. He arrived at camp as a favorite to start but noted, "a lot of guys want to be No. 1. Everybody gets better when you have big competition. I'm confident in myself."
A native of Houston Avery didn't expect to have any trouble adjusting to two-a-days in the heat and humidity of Rams Park.
"This is like spring to me," he said.
Looks like Donnie could have his break out year. Lets see Slingin' Sammy hit him down deep with Avery's speed.

It better be a breakout year for him, cause I think he might be out of here if he has a bunch of big time drops again.

Wow, who is teaching these guy about nutrition? Contrary to popular belief your supposed to eat five small meals a day not three, but one! It's no wonder why players keep getting injured so often.

My first thought was "it better be muscle..." lol. Glad to see he is wanting to become more durable, maybe we will see him be more physical as well this year. Main thing is to stay healthy.

I really wish he would get up to 205 maybe 210.

Re: Rams Report: Avery arrives 10 pounds heavier
I think a lean 190 would be ideal for Avery. 200 is probably too heavy for his frame. Put up or shut up time.
Second year in the system so no "I'm still learning".
Only thing stopping Avery is himself and his QB. Hopefully that gets reduced to just himself.

Re: Rams Report: Avery arrives 10 pounds heavier
Being that speed receivers aren't usually that big , defenders will try to intimidate them by hitting them hard being very physical and trying to rough the smaller receiver up at the line of scrimmage, so if its 10 pounds of muscle and it doesn't slow him down a step or so i think its a good move .
Torry Holt Dont play that

Re: Rams Report: Avery arrives 10 pounds heavier
I'm only guessing but I think he probably meant that what he consumed during the day only added up calorie-wise/nutritionally to one meal, not that he literally only ate once a day.And a lot of fast guys I've known, inc my childhood best friend, have that incredibly high metabolism and irritating ability to shovel crap or even eat virtually nothing & still be hyper as well as lean whereas I need a nap if I don't eat every 4-5 hours and yet have to loosen my belt just for looking at a doughnut.
I think it would be a mistake for him to get too much bigger. His best chance of success really is the same as DeSean's,imo. Yeah, he dropped some crucial balls, esp in The Skins game, but how many times was he missed deep when he had a step or more on a DB ?
