Rams Report Card: Defensive line rates an A

Rams Report Card: Defensive line rates an A
BY BILL COATS | Posted: Monday, October 18, 2010 12:05 am

Here are the grades for the St. Louis Rams after Sunday's 20-17 victory over the San Diego Chargers:

QUARTERBACK: Sam Bradford threw for 172 yards and a TD in the first half, when the Rams rolled up a 17-0 lead. He added just 26 yards in the second half, as the Rams pounded the ball on the ground. Bradford tossed a 38-yard TD pass to WR Danario Alexander and for the first time during this rookie season wasn't intercepted. GRADE: B

RUNNING BACKS: Steven Jackson had every carry for the Rams, and he produced a season-high 109 yards on 29 attempts. Jackson was at his best in the late going, when the Rams turned to him as they tried to protect their dwindling lead. GRADE: A-

RECEIVERS: Alexander's scintillating debut -- four catches for 72 yards, including a diving TD reception -- was a big boost for the offense. The three other wideouts added 73 yards on seven catches. TE Billy Bajema, returning from a knee injury, had three catches for 34 yards, including a key 18-yard pickup on a 3rd-and-9 play during a drive that finished with a field goal. GRADE: B+

OFFENSIVE LINE: The pass blocking was pretty good. Bradford was sacked three times, but he didn't have to deal with a ton of pressure. The run blocking was solid, too, especially near the end, when the Rams ground out crucial first downs. GRADE: B+

DEFENSIVE LINE: The front four had five sacks -- two each by DEs James Hall and Chris Long, and one by T Fred Robbins. That was a big plus for the secondary in its coverage. Pretty stout vs. the run, too. GRADE: A

LINEBACKERS: Grant had a career day, with two sacks. James Laurinaitis was solid, if not spectacular. Na'il Diggs wasn't much of a factor. GRADE: B

SECONDARY: S Oshiomogho Atogwe had an interception in the end zone. CBs Ron Bartell and Bradley Fletcher were very good in coverage, although the Chargers were without TE Antonio Gates and WR Malcom Floyd for much of the game because of injuries. GRADE: B+

SPECIAL TEAMS: A blocked FG, by James Hall, was huge. On the next series, Josh Brown hit from 48 yards, a clutch kick with 3:56 to go that gave the Rams a two-score cushion. A 42-yard punt return by Danny Amendola set up Brown's FG in the first quarter. Rams coverage was good. GRADE: A-

COACHING: Major props to defensive coordinator Ken Flajole for coming up with an aggressive and creative game plan. Rams hadn't had as many sacks in seven years. After rolling up 17 points in the first half, the Rams got very conservative on offense in the second, a strategy that nearly backfired. Great timing on adding Alexander to the active roster. GRADE: B+

Fred Robbins was a really good pickup, his presence is allowing Chris Long to get more freedom to apply pressure

If the blurb sheet is accurate, the fact that neither Darell Scott nor Clifton Ryan were even active for this game makes the performance of the DL even more impressive, imo.

Lau deserves more credit than he's given here, too. After probably his worst game mentally last week, imo, he & his coaches outduelled Rivers & their coaches this week. Diggs also made some excellent tackles on the elusive Sproles & held his gaps well all day.

One thing worries me; am I the only one who thought Bartell hurt his left shoulder in the second half? At one point you could see him awkwardly buttoning his chin strap with his right hand with the left dangling 7 his play in general dropped off a bit.Throw in Murphy and King's hammies & we could be looking at an injury-generated weakness for TB to exploit next Sun.

Dear OJ; Loved the leaping INT. Hated the silly dance after planting a tiny RB 10 yds downfield. Save the preening for the big plays, please.

Dear Shurmur; I never again want to see Bradford & the Rams O draped in your signature apparel in the 3rd quarter, The Shurmur Murmur-kinda like a muumuu but dull gray in color and heavy with flop sweat. It'll never sell. And while I give Spags all the credit in the world for getting these guys fired up for this game, I absolutely do not want to hear the HC say he didn't really notice what was going on with the offense because he was too involved with the D. Either he's trying to dissociate himself from his OC or that is the most ridiculous admission I've ever heard.

A big thank you to Randy Mcmichael for his key holding penalty that negated a big scramble by Rivers .Best thing he ever did for The Rams.

random note: Bobby Carpenter just got cut by The Fins for allowing a blocked punt for the second time.
