Rams Report Card: Highest Marks For O-LIne, Coaching

Rams Report Card: Highest marks for O-line, coaching

    Monday, September 27, 2010

Grading the Rams after their 30-16 victory over the Washington Redskins:

QUARTERBACK: Sam Bradford had the most solid outing of his rookie season. He completed 23 of 37 passes for 235 yards, with a TD and an interception. More important, his teammates credited Bradford with being calm yet firmly in control after the Redskins rallied for the lead in the third quarter. GRADE: B

RUNNING BACKS: Steven Jackson appeared to be on his way to a big day before a groin injury felled him late in the first half. Kenneth Darby and rookie Keith Toston stepped in nicely for Jackson against a Redskins defense was 8th in the league vs. the run. The Rams finished with a season high 133 rushing yards. GRADE: B+

RECEIVERS: WR Mark Clayton had another stout performance, with five catches for 85 yards, and Danny Amendola was solid, with six receptions for 56 yards. TE Daniel Fells had a 3-yard TD grab, and rookie TE Fendi Onobun produced a two-catch debut. GRADE: B

OFFENSIVE LINE: The pass blocking was generally good -- a few early glitches but marked improvement in the second half. Bradford was sacked just once and hit only a few of other times. The run blocking was the best it has been this season, particularly after Jackson left the game. GRADE: B+

DEFENSIVE LINE: The Redskins averaged 6.8 yards on 17 carries. QB Donovan McNabb was chased out of the pocket several times, but the Rams managed just one sack, by DE James Hall. GRADE: C+

LINEBACKERS: Pressure by newcomer Bryan Kehl led to a McNabb interception. Kehl was credited with 4 tackles in brief action. MLB James Laurinaitis was credited with a team-high 7 tackles. Good coverage vs. the Redskins TEs. GRADE: B-

SECONDARY: A 45-yard fumble return by S James Butler set up the Rams' second TD. Coverage suffered when S Oshiomogho Atogwe left with a thigh injury. Redskins WR Santana Moss piled up 124 receiving yards on just 6 catches. GRADE: C+

SPECIAL TEAMS: Another blocked field goal, the second in three games. But Josh Brown made all three FG tries in the 4th quarter, sealing the win. Donnie Jones averaged 46.0 yards (45.7 net) on three punts. Dominique Curry blocked a Washington punt. Rams coverage was OK, as were their returns. GRADE: C+

COACHING: Coach Steve Spagnuolo showed some confidence in his offense by going for it on 4th and 1 at the 'Skins 43 in the fourth quarter. The Rams got the first down and finished the drive with a field goal that gave them a two-possession cushion. OC Pat Shurmur mixed it up effectively, even going to four-WR sets several times. Excellent balance: 38 pass plays, 37 runs. DC Ken Flajole was generally aggressive, although the timing was off on several blitzes. GRADE: B+

The Redskins only scored 16 points. I would have thought the defensive grades would have been a bit better?
