Rams report: DE Chris Long added to injury list with a hip injury

1 hour ago • By Joe Lyons jlyons@post-dispatch.com

After fully participating in Wednesday's practice, defensive end Chris Long appeared on the Rams' Thursday injury report with a hip injury. Long's participation in Thursday's practice was limited.

Rams safety Darian Stewart (thigh) and cornerback Quinton Pointer (thigh) did not practice on Thursday. Pointer did some limited work on Tuesday.

After sitting out Wednesday's practice, running back Daryl Richardson (foot) did limited work on Thursday.

For the second consecutive day, tight end Cory Harkey (knee) worked out in full.

For Atlanta, wide receiver Roddy White (ankle), defensive tackled Jonathan Babineaux (knee) and Sam Baker (tackle) did not practice and ex-Mizzou linebacker Sean Weatherspoon (knee) and cornerback Asante Samuel were limited for the second consecutive day.

Wide receiver Julio Jones (knee) saw limited action Thursday after not practicing on Wednesday.

Safety Thomas DeCoud (knee), defensive tackle Peria Jerry (knee) and defensive end Cliff Matthews (neck) were upgraded from limited to full participation on Thursday.

    RAM-BLINGS

Linebacker Jonathan Stewart, a rookie free agent from Texas A&M, was added to the Rams' practice squad and returned to practice Thursday.

Stewart, a 6-foot-3, 254-pounder, opened the season on the 53-man roster, but was released Tuesday to make room as running back Isaiah Pead returned from the suspended list. Stewart cleared waivers on Wednesday.

Stewart, who was inactive for the Rams' season-opening victory over the Arizona Cardinals, was in on nine tackles during the preseason.

    • Sunday's game in Atlanta will include the first three picks of the 2008 NFL Draft. Tackle Jake Long was selected with the No. 1 overall choice by the Miami Dolphins, the Rams chose defensive end Chris Long at No. 2 and the Falcons followed up with quarterback Matt Ryan with the third choice.

    • Ryan and Falcons head coach Mike Smith are unbeaten in two games against the Rams. The host Falcons defeated St. Louis 31-27 on Dec. 28, 2008 and 34-17 in St. Louis on Nov. 21, 2010.

The Rams, however, hold a 47-26-2 edge in the series overall.

Jeff Fisher is 4-0 in his career against the Falcons.

    • Wide receiver Tavon Austin, picked eighth overall last April, led all rookies in Week 1 with six receptions.

Listed as questionable for tomorrow night.

Hayes said that Long was fine and just needed the rest. Take it for what it's worth.

Us missing Long won't hurt as much if Julio and White don't play Sunday. Both listed as questionable.

If Long is not ready, I'd rather he sit so we don't have further issues with him down the road. The beauty of what Jeff and Les have developed is a D-Line with some impressive depth. Let's be honest, while Long is important, with Quinn, Brockers and Langford as well as Hayes, Sims, & Rivers we can still make Matt Ryan's day a miserable one.

    Go Rams!

Yes, agreed. Let's put that DL depth to good use in Atlanta!

BTW, did CLong injure his hip vz Cards or did he start the season banged up? I lost track.

Re: Rams Report: DE Chris Long Added To Injury List With A Hip Injury

Rams notebook: Chris Long is questionable for Sunday
    • By Joe Lyons

Since entering the NFL in 2008, Rams defensive end Chris Long never has missed a game. In his sixth pro season, he has played in 81 consecutive games, the third-longest streak among the league’s defensive ends.

But that streak could be in jeopardy.

Long, who led the Rams with 11½ sacks a year ago, did not practice on Friday because of a hip injury and is listed as “questionable” for the team’s game Sunday, in Atlanta. In NFL jargon, questionable means his chances of playing are 50-50.

But William Hayes, who took most of Long’s reps at right defensive end during Friday’s practice, knows better than to count his teammate out.

“Chris is fine. He’s OK,’’ said Hayes, another sixth-year pro. “He just needed a day off, just to relax.’’

In the season-opening win over the Arizona Cardinals, Long had two quarterback pressures, one quarterback hit and recovered a fumble. Hayes recorded three tackles and a game-clinching sack.

“In this league, you have to prepare like you’re the guy who’s going to go every week, so I’m ready to go, ready to fill my role,’’ Hayes said.

The defensive line is the Rams’ deepest and most talented unit, and the rotation of defensive line coach Mike Waufle helps keep everyone fresh.

“I give Chris a breather when he needs one and they bring me in on nickel downs to rush from defensive tackle,’’ Hayes said. “It’s all about guys doing their role and doing it well.’’

The rest of the Rams’ injury report includes tight end Cory Harkey (probable/knee), running back Daryl Richardson (probable/foot), safety Darian Stewart (doubtful/thigh) and cornerback Quinton Pointer (out/thigh).

Harkey and Richardson went through full workouts on Friday. Stewart and Pointer did not practice.

Atlanta’s injury report includes nine players. Safety Thomas DeCoud (knee), defensive tackle Peria Jerry (knee) and defensive end Cliff Matthews (neck) practiced fully on Friday and are probable for Sunday.

Listed as questionable after limited work on Friday are: former Mizzou linebacker Sean Weatherspoon (knee), wide receiver Julio Jones (knee), wide receiver Roddy White (ankle), defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (knee), tackle Sam Baker (knee) and cornerback Asante Samuel (thigh).

    MIZZOU CONNECTION

The Falcons’ defense features a pair of players — Weatherspoon and safety William Moore — who starred for the University of Missouri.

Moore, of Hayti, Mo., was a second-round selection in 2009 who battled through injuries as a rookie to earn a starting spot in 2010. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection a year ago, finishing with 75 tackles, a sack, eight pass defenses and four interceptions.

Weatherspoon, a Texas native, was the Falcons’ top choice (19th overall) in 2010 and is the signal-caller for the Atlanta defense.

He was second on the team in tackles (95) and also had three sacks and his first NFL interception in 2012.

“Both of those guys have been integral parts of the success that we’ve had,’’ Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “Sean has come in and has really grown into a leadership role. I think it’s really natural for the linebacker to be more of a leader across the different position groups.

“William has come in and played well for us. He’s a very physical safety that has the athleticism to play techniques that a free safety can play, so it allows us to give (defensive coordinator) Mike (Nolan) and his staff with a lot of flexibility. Both those guys have made a lot of plays for us since they’ve been with us.’’

In the Falcons’ 23-17 loss to the Saints in New Orleans to open the season, Moore had seven solo tackles and eight overall, and Weatherspoon chipped in with seven overall stops, including five solos.

The Atlanta roster also includes reserve tight end Chase Coffman, who played but did not make any catches on Sunday. He also went to Mizzou.

    Ram-Blings

Hayes and Rams cornerback Cortland Finnegan were assessed fines of $7,875 by the NFL for late hits last weekend.

    • Former Rams coach Mike Martz, the architect of the Greatest Show on Turf, will be inducted into the Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame in California on Nov. 7.

In NFL jargon, questionable means [Chris Long's] chances of playing are 50-50.
In Longonian dialect, questionable means: "Are you kidding? I'M PLAYING! / I'M THERE!"

Seriously, however, not knowing how bad CLong's hip injury is (just thinking about it makes MY hip hurt!), maybe it is better for him to miss his first game and let William Hayes take care of the business at hand.
