Rams rookie Gilyard robbed at gunpoint

St. Louis Rams rookie receiver Mardy Gilyard, a fourth-round pick out of the University of Cincinnati, was robbed at gunpoint near the Cincinnati campus Monday night.

WLWT reports that Gilyard was walking with another man just after 9:30 p.m. when two men approached, one holding a gun. Gilyard had a $500 necklace and $90 in cash taken from him.

Police have made no arrests, and no one was injured. There's no word on whether Gilyard, who was a star player for the Bearcats, was specifically targeted in the robbery.

    Taken from PFT
Glad he escaped without any injuries

Glad he's OK as well but jeez can he catch a break? He'll be missing OTA's and gets robbed too?! Poor guy. Once he gets out to St. Louis I think everything will start working in his favor. Good luck Mardy.

I blame Pacman Jones. Didn't he just get signed by the Bengals not too long ago? Just sayin'...

Any truth to the rumor that Marvin Lewis wants to know the 40 yard times for the assailants?

    After looking at the facts:

    1. Cincinnati
    2. Cincinnati
    3. Cincinnati
    4. Gun

Shouldn't Gilyard get the heck outta there?

Downtown Cincinnati in general is not the best place to be hanging around, and the campus area in particular is not a place I'd like to live in. Glad he went unharmed.

Re: Rams rookie Gilyard robbed at gunpoint

Here is more to the story.

Mardy Gilyard, a former star University of Cincinnati football player, was robbed on the street at gunpoint in the 2600 block of Jefferson Avenue near the UC campus on Monday night, according to Cincinnati police.

Two men armed with a gun approached Gilyard and his bodyguard, Terry Hobbs, and robbed them of $300 in cash and $1,000 in jewelry about 9:30 p.m., a police report shows. No injuries were reported.
Gilyard, 23, a standout wide receiver, was picked in the fourth round of the NFL draft last month by the St. Louis Rams.

“I am OK. Just upset, you know, more than anything,” Gilyard said Tuesday from his Northern Kentucky home. “It's part of living in the city. I know from my experiences in the city when it warms up – as soon as it warms up – the grimy cats in the city come out. I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings as much as I should have been.”

Gilyard said he was driving his 2010 Camaro home from a weekend fishing on Lake Erie in Lorain, Ohio, with his brother, Antonio, and Hobbs when the trio stopped in at the BP gas station on Jefferson Avenue in Corryville to get gas and snacks.

Gilyard said he was walking back to his car, carrying two bags of groceries, when a man approached and demanded the white-gold chain around his neck.

“We see your chains! Give me your chains!” Gilyard recalled the robber yelling at him. The man also demanded the keys to Gilyard’s new car. Gilyard , who had the keys in his pants pocket, told him the car had a keyless ignition.

“I’m like, 'brother, I ain’t got the keys,” Gilyard recalled. “So then it was, ‘well, forget the keys! Give me the money! What about the money!’ That’s when he put a .38 revolver in my face. I gave him the pocket change I had on me.”

By then, Gilyard said his bodyguard had emerged from the gas station and was robbed of his cash, too. A second robber hopped into Gilyard’s Camaro, where his brother was sleeping. His brother awoke and was ordered to be quiet by the suspect.

"My brother was spooked," Gilyard said. "They could have kidnapped my brother, who knows." Instead, both robbers took off and remain at large.

Gilyard said it was the first time he’s been a crime victim in the city. He said he goes around now with a bodyguard to protect himself, in part because he has been drafted by the NFL.

“I have it for situations like what happened,” he said. “I feel like I am a regular guy but I know everybody doesn’t view me as a regular guy because I was drafted. People might target me. I’d rather have the security. But it just sucks I was with my security last night when this happened.”

At least one of the suspects was described as a black man who wore all black clothing. He was 5-foot-7 and 185 pounds.

Gilyard had 87 receptions for 1,191 yards and 11 touchdowns last season with the Bearcats. He is the only player in UC history to score a touchdown receiving, rushing, and on a kickoff return and a punt return in the same season.

In his UC career, Gilyard caught 204 passes for 3,003 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also averaged 28.6 yards and scored five touchdowns on kick returns.

I'm just happy he didn't try and prove that he's faster than a speeding bullet.

    A 2010 Camaro

    $1000 in jewelery

    $300 in cash...

Did Gilyard sign his contract already?
