    Re: Rams Rookie Jersey Numbers

Probably Leonard is waiting to get his #23 when Butler leaves.

And I don't like #37 for Wade. He looks like a #22 to me.

And Klop should switch to #88 and let Hall have #82.

#90's a hell of a number. I wore it for my 2 years of High School football.

I also like #36 but he's probably gonna change that.

Isn't 28 open? I mean, Faulk has retired... altough I wouldn't be surprised to see his number retired sometime in the near future.

    Who's 29 and who's 40?

I would have thought 40 would be open now that Arch is gone.. and I can't think off the top of my head who 29 would be.

Stupid me.. obviously Dickerson's retired #.

Except Archuleta wore #31 whenever he was a Ram.

As for #40, maybe max is referring to Crazy Legs Hirsch.

    Re: Rams Rookie Jersey Numbers

#40 belongs to my hero, Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch.

Being a Rams fan you need to know this:

Hirsch was the first full-time "flanker" in NFL history and to quote the late George Allen "Hirsch was the greatest long gain reciever who ever played the game." He was key to the Rams victory in the 1951 NFL championship with NFL record 1,495 yards receiving, which stood for 19 years. He also had 66 catches, and 17 touchdowns that same year. He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1968.

    From the Pro Football HOF:
In a crucial game midway into the 1951 NFL season, the Los Angeles Rams found themselves trailing the Chicago Bears, 14-0, and deep in a hole on their own 9-yard line. Quarterback Bob Waterfield faked a handoff, stepped back a few paces and threw far downfield. Elroy Hirsch took off at the snap and was running full-throttle at midfield. Waterfield's pass was over his head but Elroy gathered in the ball on his fingertips and raced for a 91-yard touchdown. The Rams went on to an important 42-17 victory. It was a patented "Elroy Hirsch special," a sizzling shocker that was repeated 17 times that year.
Besides his 91-yard bomb, Elroy had numerous other long-yardage touchdowns as he established a new league record at the time of 1,495 yards receiving. It wasn' t just the number of long-gainers but the way he did the job that set Hirsch apart from all others. "Crazylegs" had a unique running style that made him famous. When running downfield, his muscular legs seemed to gyrate in six different directions at once.
Many observers insisted “Crazylegs” was the best end ever but Hirsch modestly downgraded his own case. "I'm just a busted-down, retreaded halfback who happened to get lucky."

I knew of Crazylegs, but not to that extent nor that his number was #40. I forgot that Archuleta wore #31 as a Ram, I guess I just have an image in my head of him in that red Skins jersey wearing the 40, on the bench. Thanks for the enlightenment, Nick & Max.

On another note; I don't think Hirsch's number is retired, so couldn't Leonard wear it if he wanted to?

    Re: Rams Rookie Jersey Numbers

That's right, although Rams jersey No. 36 has not been 'officially' retired, it hasn't been issued since Bettis left after his 3rd season, i.e., two in L.A. and the last one when the team moved to STL in 1995.

I'm looking forward to Leonard donning No. 23 because even if Butler would stay, which is unlikely, he would probably be asked to relinquish it to our RB rookie -- and may Brian Leonard wear it proudly for a long tenure. It will also be great to see Adam Carriker with No. 90!

A comprehensive / complete reference of Rams 0 to 99 jerseys numbers since their 1st year in L.A. is found here in the Clan. // Note: unable to get correct reference link; am posting the jerseys list below. Will update once rookie players take part in their 1st regular season game:

    ===============================

:r Dear Rams aficionados / ClanRam fans,

Time for some Bye Week extra activity.

From the 'JERSEYS' thread initiated four years ago, this here is the main ingredient, the nitty gritty, the JERSEY NUMBERS and the PLAYERS who sported them as far back as 1946 and as recently as 2006.

Let's see if we can update the list w/names currently missing -- shall we?

We are one of the few teams in pro sports to cover ALL #s 0-99. So ADD-ON! :l

    RAMS JERSEYS REMEMBERED

NOTE: with a few exceptions from those that came from the Cleveland Rams era and played in L.A., (indicated by a ~, see also other symbol legends below and at bottom), the list contemplates Ram players from the Los Angeles and St. Louis teams, i.e., 1946 through 2006.

Though "unofficial", over 95% of entries below have been carefully checked and confirmed through the research, memory and love of the Rams fans that have followed and supported their team of over half a century. NFL RAMS: history and passion!

Listed, Ram players w/At Least One Regular Season Game.

    Last name in alpha order.

    Symbols:
    @. Enshrined in NFL HOF.
~. See Cleveland Rams note above.
^. Honored w/retiring of Rams jersey No. after illustrious career.

    Bettis?

He is NOT a Ram. He doesn't consider himself even one scintilla as being a Ram.
He hates the Rams and I don't hate him but don't want him being given any reverance as a Ram. Give #36 to anyone who wants it. The more the merrier.

Now, Terrell wearing #75 is another matter. That number should NOT be worn by anyone again, ever.
