More than one-fourth of the St. Louis Rams 53-man roster -- at least as it stands today -- is made up of rookies. Nine were draft choices; the five others were undrafted.

"Until you guys started throwing out these numbers, I hadn’t even thought about it," coach Steve Spagnuolo told reporters Monday after the first official regular-season practice. "Honestly, I didn’t put the roster together, look at it, and say, ‘OK how many seniors, juniors, and freshmen do we have.’ I didn’t do that. It is what it is.

"We kept what we felt were the best football players, both for now and for the future."

The high number of undrafted rookies to make the team is a testament to the team's scouting department, Spagnuolo stressed. "That is a credit to those guys and all the work they do right after the draft is over," he said. "But those guys earned it, those players that you’re talking about. That’s not easy to do in this league, in this landscape, to come in undrafted and make it."

We also had some undrafted players playing in the 1999-2000 season. It worked out pretty well that year.

Seems like we had this one undrafted QB and he was pretty good that year.

I don't think this is all that high a percentage, relatively speaking. The Rams had about 20 UDFA by the end of last year. The problem is that there are so few guys in their prime-the career sweet spot of about 4 to 7 years.
