Rams Roster Cuts Underway; Gholston Gone

Rams roster cuts underway; Gholston, Mughelli gone

2 hours ago BY JIM THOMAS

The Rams went about the business Friday of trimming their roster from 75 players to the regular-season limit of 53. By late afternoon Friday, 14 players were known to be released.

In addition, wide receiver Austin Pettis won't count on the roster for the first two weeks of the regular season as he serves out the final two weeks of a four-game suspension for violating league policy on performance-enhancing substances. That left seven names yet to be accounted for.

    By position, Friday's cuts included:

    Quarterback: Tom Brandstater

Running back/fullback: Ben Guidugli, Ovie Mughelli, Chase Reynolds.

    Wide receiver: Nick Johnson

    Tight end: Deangelo Peterson

Offensive line: Tim Barnes, T-Bob Hebert, Joe Long, Bryan Mattison

Defensive line: Mason Brodine, Vernon Gholston

    Linebacker: Sammy Brown

    Secondary: Kendric Burney

Other possible cuts, but unconfirmed, could be Cornell Banks, Jamaar Jarrett and Scott Smith on the defensive line. (In addition, the Rams may be seeking an injury settlement for Darell Scott, or place him on injured reserve.)

Also tight end Cory Harkey, offensive lineman Jose Valdez, and either linebacker Justin Cole or Aaron Brown could be in roster jeopardy.

Right now the Rams are thought to still have 10 defensive backs on the team, 5 safeties and 5 corners. That number includes both Matthew Daniels and Rodney McLeod at safety, as well as cornerback Quinton Pointer, who has come on late in the preseason.

There have been indications also that the team could be shopping cornerback Bradley Fletcher in a trade. It looks like rookie Trumaine Johnson has earned the nickel back _ or third cornerback _ job. And if Fletcher is at best the fourth corner on the roster, they may not be willing to pay his $1.2 million base salary in what is the final year of his contract.

As of early Friday afternoon, third quarterback Austin Davis was still on the club.

I think the great display of decision-making, accuracy, footwork, and pocket presence of Austin Davis was just too much for the staff to go with Clemens.

Clemens' performance was mindboggling. Dunno if he thought he was going to cruise because of his familiarity with Schotty's system but that wasn't even the plucky improv artist we saw last year, never mind a stabilizing presence.

Good riddance, I say. I think he did The young Rams a disservice by not being someone who could do his part right consistently while they learned.I think Feeley did a much better job in that situation in Sam's rookie year & helped both Bradford and the WRs. Let's hope KC hasn't held this group back too much. I know KC made some good plays, too, but the one I remember is when he darned near got Quick decapitated by leading him right into a defender.

Davis was the plucky smart one this pre-season. Still, he's far from a polished product himself. I hate the two QB idea & hope they have a vet with a better attitude in mind as well.

Can't say I'm happy to see Conrath on the roster, either. Like a drunk giraffe in eff-me pumps, I'm tellin' ya.

pretty much agree with all of that. I wish we had a veteran behind Bradford for many reasons and not just Davis. But Clemens wasn't doing any good, which speaks volumes about himself. Still have time to pick up a veteran, and im hoping we do.

Would you prefer "a cracked-out camel in stilettos" ?

Any DT who gets blocked to his knees in open space by a QB ( back-up Drew Stanton) pretty much deserves to have his boyant flammed, imo.
