Great pick up to mix in with the current LB corps. I am starting to get the feeling that Spags is thinking about rotating his LB's in much the same fashion as his DL

    Leber strengthens Rams at linebacker

The St. Louis Rams added toughness and seasoning around their young middle linebacker by agreeing to terms with 32-year-old oustide linebacker Ben Leber.

Leber visited the Seattle Seahawks this week, but the Rams' offer for one year and $1.25 million was more appealing, ESPN's John Clayton reported.

Leber joins Zac Diles and Brady Poppinga among veteran linebackers signed to the Rams' roster this offseason. Our Scouts Inc. report on Leber describes him as durable, consistent and with good range, but better suited for zone coverage than straight man-to-man.

Leber has not missed a game over the last four seasons. He has started 110 of the 132 games he has played since entering the NFL with San Diego in 2002. Leber played strong-side linebacker in the Chargers' 3-4 defense, but he played the weak side in the Vikings' 4-3 scheme last season.

Leber gives the Rams flexibility at the position. He's been more durable than Poppinga recently.

Between him, Diles, Diggs, Poppinga, and Vobora, two solid starters at OLB will surely emerge.

    Ben Leber #51 LB

    Minnesota Vikings

    Height: 6-3 Weight: 244 Age: 32
    Born: 12/7/1978 Vermillion , SD
    College: Kansas State
    Experience: 10th season
    High School: Vermillion HS [SD]

    High School Career

Lining up primarily at running back, Leber was named to several high school All-America teams at Vermillion (S.D.) High School. As a junior, he rushed for 1,404 yards and 18 touchdowns, and notched 1,350 yards in his senior year. That season, he was declared a Parade Magazine All-America (the only South Dakotan so honored in 1997), an honorable mention All-USA by USA Today, and was selected to play in the North-South Dakota All-Star game. An excellent student, he was also an Academic All-State selection. He also went to School in Albia, Iowa.

    College career

At Kansas State, Leber made the switch to full-time linebacker. A two-time All-Big 12 selection, he finished his college career with 216 tackles, 46 tackles for loss, and 13.5 sacks. His 216 career tackles were the fifth most in Kansas State history. As a junior, he earned second team all-conference honors. The year later, he was an All-America third-team selection by the Associated Press, a consensus All-Big 12 Conference first-team choice, and a team captain. He received a degree in business-general management in 2002.Professional career.

    Professional career

    San Diego Chargers

Leber was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He was an immediate-impact rookie, playing in all 16 games and starting 14 of them. He was selected to both the Pro Football Weekly and Football Digest All-Rookie teams, finishing the year with 49 tackles, 5 sacks (third on the team), and 3 forced fumbles (first on the team).

In his second season, Leber started every game at strong side linebacker for the Chargers, notching 75 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 pass defensed, and 1 forced fumble. In his third year, he was an every-game starter for the Chargers, finishing the season with 58 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 fumble recovery. The next season, Leber was injured during training camp and again during the season. This led to him losing his starting position to future Pro-Bowler Shawne Merriman. He finished 2005 with 22 tackles, 2 sacks and 1 fumble recovery.

    Minnesota Vikings

As an unrestricted free agent, Leber was signed by the Minnesota Vikings on March 11, 2006. Playing in 15 games, he finished his first season with the team with 46 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 interception, 3 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 fumble recovery touchdown. The next year was even better—playing in all 16 games, Leber notched 67 tackles, 5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 interception. In 2008, Leber again played the full season, recording 64 tackles, a career-low 1.5 sacks, and 2 interceptions.

Just when you thought they were done... wow. When it's all said and done if this team doesn't make the playoffs this year it won't be for a lack of trying, that's for sure.

    Re: Rams Signed Ben Leber.

Clearly Spags and company had as much faith in our outside linebackers last year as I did. Looking forward to the competition, those that don't earn starting jobs will be valuable subs and backups, and our special teams should be extremely solid.

Additionally all of our new lbs signed one year deals, so the competition should be fierce in this "show me the money" year. Lets just hope none of our rbs or wide receivers get hurt as they cross the middle in practice.

I really like this pickup, we have brought in a LB who is good in coverage because the other players brought in were more run suited>? I was a little worried about the Rams LB's covering the TE's and backs. I now feel a lot better. WELL DONE DESPAGS.!

Exactly my thoughts. I wonder if Kroenke just gave Devaney keys to the bank this year.

    Now Balzer has posted this:

Another source has told me Leber deal is done. Of course, what does "done" mean?
Well, Mr. Clinton--er--Balzer... I think "done" means "finished" or "completed." Shouldn't YOU know what it means?

Anyhow... if it happens, I think it will be a good pickup. I certainly feel better about the depth of our LB corps with the addition of Diles, Poppinga and Leber than I did going into FA.

Agreed, from what I've heard, he's great at pass coverage but is a liability against the run. Though this is a significant upgrade for us since our secondary had problems blowing coverage on 1st and 40, 2nd and 25, and 3rd and 15.
