    Rams sign CB Lenny Walls

Cornerback and Rams agree on 1-year deal
    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    03/25/2007

Continuing to add depth to their secondary, the Rams have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with free-agent cornerback Lenny Walls.

Walls, 27, entered the league as an undrafted rookie out of Boston College in 2002. He spent most of his first four seasons with Denver, appearing in 43 games with 20 starts. He started all 16 games for the Broncos in 2003, but shoulder and groin injuries limited him to seven games in '04 and seven in '05.

Last season for Kansas City, Walls registered 29 tackles with five pass breakups, starting twice. Walls will compete for the No. 4 cornerback job in St. Louis along with recently signed Mike Rumph. Walls has very good size for a corner at 6-4, 192 pounds.

"We're trying to match up against those big guys in our division," coach Scott Linehan said Saturday. "We're like five inches shorter. It'd be nice to be able to look those guys in the eye."

Nice signing to add some more competition to the huge role of 4th string corner.

6-4 is very big for a corner. I hope he can hit.

Linehan again, does what needs to be done to get bigger, and stuff runners. I loved the 'look west foes in the eye' comment. We will get there, to the land of RAM TOUGH DEFENSE , to traditional nasty in your eye D! Won't it be gloriously awesome to behold.

Good signing and with all of the CB depth that the Rams are adding it takes away a serious draft need.

I think that the Rams are looking to move up by reducing their draft needs.

4th string corner seems like a critical position on our D.

This is a very interesting point. Let's look at the areas we all kind of thought the Rams needed to address:

    NT: Nothing yet
    DE: Traded for James Hall
    LB: Signed Christ Draft
    WR: Signed Drew Bennett
    OL: Resigned Todd Steussie
DB: Signed Todd Johnson, Mike Rumph, Lenny Walls
    RB: Signed Travis Minor

The only real area in which the Rams have not improved on appears to be the defensive line (and maybe some more help on the interior O-line). Based on that, trading up to try and do so does seem to make sense.

Re: Rams sign CB Lenny Walls

Tye Hill, at 5-10, must look a little funny standing next to a 6-4 Walls.

But it's all in the heart of the football player and perhaps Hill has more of that than a lanky Lenny. Tye might have a more efficient learning curve than other CBs; he seemed to have made good progress by year's end last season. Perhaps ends up being better than a Corey Ivy type of CB.

We'll see how the competition filters & sifts our DBs in Training Camp as 81BG implied.
