Rams sign DT Hovan

Oh I agree, Hovan is not very good. But the notion that he could very well be in the mix as part of a rotation, or depending on how things go emerge as a starter, tells you something about what the Rams are working with at DT.

Could it be that with camp approaching, and all the rigors that accompany it, Spags wants another body on the D-line to help keep everyone if not "fresh," at least somewhat healthy? Also a comment Spags made regarding the overall effort of certain players during an especially hot day recently, indicated he felt the effort level wasn't up to snuff. No he didn't identify the culprits, but bringing in more competition at a position, does send a message ..

The only drawback I see is that it might mean less time on the field for the young guys. Good in the short term, but maybe not in the long term. This will be something to watch. If we're starting Robbins and Hovan by opening day, we can probably assume that the long-term answers at DT are not currently on the roster.

I agree with that. My expectation is that the starters will be Ryan and Robbins, and that Scott and either Hovan or Gibson will be part of the rotation. Hopefully, Scott will really emerge this year and force his way into the starting lineup by 2011.

Could be a camp body, but if so, why wait until now to sign him? Or why not give the spot to another young guy on the market who might be able to show you something?

But they've also had ten days of OTAs to get a look at some people, and I'm simply wondering if they saw something during that span made them feel the extra veteran competition would benefit the line. If Hovan has been available all this time to any team that wanted to sign him, and the Rams waited until now to ink him, it very well could be that they saw something during the OTAs that caused concern. Not unreasonable Nick .. Heck we may even find out one day ...

Hmm it does make you wonder. Maybe Robbins isn't performing at the level Spags thought he would?

Maybe Hovan was cheaper than a young guy?


I do think it is kind of intriguing why we would sign him now. Maybe we plan to cut Gibson.


I don't know if Hovan has anything left in the tank. However, he does have some sort of talent, considering he is a former first round pick, and had a pretty nice 4-5 seasons with the Vikings.

Well, anyways, I guess we're going to have to wait and find out.
