    Rams Sign LB Smith

Rams sign linebacker Smith to one-year dealESPN.com news services

The Rams added more speed to their linebacking corp by reaching a one-year, $750,000 deal with Minnesota outside linebacker Raonall Smith. The Rams started free agency by signing Will Witherspoon of the Panthers and plan to start him at middle linebacker.

Smith, 28, was a second-round choice of the Vikings in 2002 but was slowed by injuries in 2002 and 2004. Smith is a 6-2, 241-pound linebacker with excellent speed. The Dolphins were talking to him about competing for playing time, but he opted for the Rams.

Smith is expected to get work as a strongside outside linebacker even though his speed and ability to rush would make him a threat as a weakside linebacker. Smith's agent, Frank Bauer, has watched former Washington State linebackers succeed under Jim Haslett's defensive system and in the end decided the Rams were the best opportunity.

    He'll receive a $150,000 signing bonus.

For the money, looks like a great bet to me.

    Lets count linebackers.

Spoon, Pisa, Trev Faulk, Chillar, Wahlroos
    Smith and Coakley and draft

Who am i missing and i appreciate that coakley may get cut if he doesnt recover.

    ramming speed to all

Great sign IMO because of the money we gave him.

Can't argue with this one. If he pans out, he's a steal. If not, no big loss.

And who might those former Cougar LBs under Haslett be?

    Mark Fields

That's the only WSU LB that has played under Haslett that I know of. I guess agents will say anything sometimes.

Why weakside? We've got several of those already.

i meant to say that he is flexible enough to play both positions...and he will get a chance to play weakside in case of injury or as a change of pace guy imo

He's one of those hit-or-miss guys. If he can stay healthy, he has the talent to play a significant role, and push Chillar if nothing else. But as AV said, if he washs out, there's a minimal investment in him.

That contract sounds great. I'm a bit surprised we managed to get him to sign for that. His medical record is a mile long, though, so it makes sense not to sink too much money in him.

    College
    1998 - shoulder injury, starts 2 games, plays 6
1999 - knee and shoulder injury, starts 4, plays 8
    2000 - healthy
    2001 - healthy
    Pro
2002 - shoulder injury, placed on injured reserve
2003 - inactive for 7 games because of hamstring injury
    2004 - 2 concussions in 3 weeks, injured reserve
2005 - first complete season as a pro without major injury

Doesn't matter the injury history, since he was healthy all of last year. The Rams are running out of money and you could either go for a player that is a gamble for this price, or get a veteran for the league minimum.

We are getting a guy with some upside. More upside than paying the veteran minimum to a guy that you know all you're getting is a backup, but another body.

This guy at least has at least some potential to be a starter.

(Aside from the fact that I'm firmly against any more defensive players from Minnesota.)
