    Rams sign new DT ...

    Rams sign defensive tackle
    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    Wednesday, Sep. 12 2007

The Rams have added defensive tackle Louis Leonard to their 53-man roster,
filling the spot created when Claude Wroten received a four-game suspension for
    violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.
Leonard was signed off the San Diego Chargers’ practice squad.
At 6-4, 330 pounds, he’s a wide body who impressed the Rams with his play when
the teams met Aug. 18 in an exhibition game at the Edward Jones Dome.
Leonard, a native of Los Angeles, was signed as an undrafted rookie by the
Chargers in May after playing his college ball at Fresno State.

From what little I've read about him, he can play both ... The Chargers seem to sniff out good D-linemen, so there is a chance this guy could be a find ...

Indeed, what I've read about him is that he's had some injury issues but can dominate when healthy. Also sounds as if he's fairly stout against the run.

Since Wroten will no longer be spelling Carriker on passing downs - at least not until the end of the suspension - maybe the Rams just want another body that can give Carriker a break when he needs it...? Or perhaps they're planning on letting Carriker take some snaps at UT in some formations, and wanted to add another guy who could potentially play nose.

I wonder why they didn't move Jackson up from the practice squad.

Since we signed this guy from another team's practice squad what happens when C. Wroten comes back? Are we obligated to keep him on the roster all year or can we relegate him to our practice squad? Does anyone know how this works? Thanx in advance, guys.

We can cut Leonard and, if he makes it through waivers, we then sign him to the practice squad if we want.

...or we can cut Wroten's pot-smokin' azz and keep the new guy, if he pans out. Personally, I'd opt for cutting Wroten. But then, I have zero tolerance for guys that don't have the mental toughness to do something as simple as keeping it clean for the sake of the team, and for one's livelihood.

Thanks for the info, Nick; you are a veritable fount of knowledge. BTW, if you don't mind, what is your major at WV? I've got a guess what it might be, but I'll let you go first!!

Well, I guess I was wrong in that I imagined you were majoring in Journalism (I believe it may also be known as 'Communications' these days). So how much longer until you are out in the Real World?
P.S. 10,000 posts!! Seems like you passed 5,000 just a little while ago. Man is time flying or what?

Re: Rams sign new DT ...

This is a good move the Rams need a DT and they need to stop the run. Leonard at 330lbs. will help in both categories. This signing will help with some situational beef to the middle of the defense.

Plus like someone has said the Chargers have a knack for finding DL prospects.

So far, not knowing much about this young man (other than he's a big DT), I say, 'EXCELLENT'! ...EXCELLENT.

I've seen the word 'hope' used quite a bit lately -- and for good reason (I've implored with hope myself this week, as has RamWraith and others) -- so once again, I hope this new Leonard will fill the DL need.

And I too hope he somehow bounces Wroten out of the way for good. :bash:

Leonard has a 4 game try out to take Wroten's job and lets hope he plays well enough to bounce someone from the roster.

Re: Rams sign new DT ...

Here is his bio from the link provided by MauiRam:

    Positives:
Thick, strong two-gap lineman who clogs the middle of the field. Quick off the snap, stout at the point and rarely gives ground. Plays with a nasty disposition and works to get involved. Above-average athlete who makes plays down the line of scrimmage.

    Negatives:
Does not use his hands well, preferring to put his head down and bull-rush opponents off the ball. Looked poorly conditioned last year. Possesses just a short burst of speed and is only an average pass rusher.

    ________________________________________________________________________

So he may have potential or may just be a short term stop gap. I hope he seizes the opportunity and works his butt off to make the team.
