    Interesting.

He was unquestionably a "bust" in Chicago, but as "shots in the dark" go, you could do worse.

Chicago Bears cut former No. 1 draft pick Chris Williams

We found out why no matter how much J'Marcus Webb struggled early this year that the Chicago Bears refused to give former No. 1 draft pick Chris Williams a try at left tackle? They didn't even want him on the team, much less in the starting lineup. The Bears waived Williams. As a further insult, they waived him to bring back another player they had waived earlier.

So it's out with Chris Williams and in with cornerback Zack Bowman.

Williams winds up being a huge disappointment. First off, he was one of Chicago's higher first-round draft picks at No. 14. He also was chosen in what was one of the deepest drafts ever for offensive linemen. He wound up starting 38 games in five seasons, but only seven games at the left tackle spot he was drafted to play. Williams also started 20 games at left guard, including most of last year, and 11 at right tackle, where he started out after missing his rookie season with a back injury.

Williams was always underwhelming, although he occasionally looked adequate. In other words, he played like most of Chicago's offensive line the last few years. My one (repeated) criticism of how the Bears used Chris Williams is that they never gave him much of an opportunity to play the position he was drafted to play and was probably best suited to play. I don't want Chris Williams on my team as a guard either. He's not physical enough. As a right tackle, he'd be an over-priced backup. Again, not physical enough. But left tackle rewards finesse more than any other position on the offensive line (center would be second). With no other great options, I'd have given Williams an extended tryout there.

But it's also no great loss that he's gone.

And it was real easy for the Bears to let him go.

Because the Chicago Bears admit no mistakes by letting Chris Williams go now.

Instead, new GM Phil Emery points out a mistake made by former GM Jerry Angelo.

It's reminiscent of Angelo waiving Cade McNown before the start of his first season with the Bears, which pointed a strong finger of blame at the man he replaced, Mark Hatley.

I would imagine this is just a depth move while Hunter and Saffold are down

In the context of waiving Ojinaka, i would have considered Esther Williams an upgrade, let alone Chris Williams.

Is it just me or is the FO (Les) just non stop? He's always looking for players that can improve the team. I don't recall the Rams FO ever adding players like this. Sure this might just be a looks see or depth. BUT at least we are trying to uncover some talent. He was a first round pick, in the hands of most that may not mean much. But in the hands of Paul Bordeau who knows what he can do with him.

That's music to my ears seeing Quinn Ojinnaka out of this team.

We might as well give him a shot. Our offensive line could use a boost right about now.
