Now the question is, probably cant afford both Cofield and Sproles ... which is it gonna be?
Great signing though, NFC West ... watch your Back

Cofield no doubt, no question. Add Cofield, and we are instantly a top ten defense.
Way to git 'er done, Billy D.

Rams Reach Agreement with Mikell

The Rams were successful in their first dive into the free-agent pool Monday afternoon, agreeing to terms with Philadelphia Eagles safety Quintin Mikell on a four-year contract. The deal is reportedly worth $27 million with $14 million guaranteed, although some of the guarantees might only be for injury. The first three years have a value of $20 million.
An undrafted free agent with the Eagles in 2003, Mikell started 15 games at strong safety for the Eagles last season. The start he missed last year in the final game of the regular season is the only one he has missed in the last three seasons.
Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo was the defensive backs coach for the Eagles in Mikell's rookie season, and coached the linebackers for the next three seasons before going to the New York Giants in 2007 as defensive coordinator.
Mikell, who will be 31 on Sept. 16, joins a Rams safety group that has James Butler, Craig Dahl and Darian Stewart under contract, along with rookie draft picks Jermale Hines and Jonathan Nelson.
Under terms of the current rules in the NFL, veteran free agents can agree to contracts, but they can't officially be signed until Friday.
The Rams also agreed to terms with 24 rookies agents, but won't make an announcement until they receive signed contracts. One player that agreed to terms Monday night, Oregon State cornerback James Dockery, then decided instead to agree to a contract with the Cleveland Browns.
Mikell's addition combined with Dahl's presence, the Ram's preference for Stewart, and the younger guys the team brought in all spell Butler's release to me. The Rams may wait until the ink is on Mikell's contract, or they may bring Butler to camp just to see what he has left and keep their roster closer to the 90-player mark.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but before anyone has been signed we were 31.6 under the mark we needed to be. 5M at most for our rookie class, 6.75 for Quinton Mikell so thats 11.75Mill which leaves 19.85 M which should give us plenty for CoField, Sproles and a road grader G.
EDIT::
This article was before Mikell signing....Quote:
The St. Louis Rams do not have much available room toward the $120 million NFL salary cap this year. In an email conversation with ESPN's Mike Sando, he confirmed that the Rams have approximately $12 million in cap space, as things stand right now.
Although if they cut Butler, they would save at least a couple mil.
If you look at the guys in FA that have been signed already its all about system familiarity and Mikell has plenty.
We will all miss OJ and his playmaking, but Mikell brings alot more versatility he can come up and bang like Spags expects his safety's to do. Where he really helps is in past defense where he cover TE and recievers
My only concern with Mikell is that it is the Eagles letting him go, and the Eagles seem to have a decent history of letting guys go when they aren't that useful anymore. Probably still an upgrade for us, but it makes me uneasy.
The eagles let him go for cap reasons. Not because of performance. They simply didnt have the money to pay him and have other needs.
ramming speed to all

Well he is a BSU alum, which means he must be awesome right? :)
I read that the eagles aren't gonna resign any of their fa so they can have cap room.
This is a great signing. No depth here, this is exactly what the Rams needed. Hate to have Safeties any time being a run stuffer but this guy helps our run defense. Good job by the front office. Now, this offense needs HELP. Sproles should be the main target.
It will be interesting to see who starts at safety week 1 - Mikell and Stewart?
