That wasn't the statement I was responding to, though STATs Inc credits Caldwell with one actual drop during the '06 season.
However, the person I was responding to talked about one specific drop in the playoffs, and then said the Rams should find someone who can catch the ball. That one drop doesn't take away from the fact that Caldwell had a career year in New England.
The point is people will highlight and ignore what they want. For as big as that drop was, it doesn't change what he did over the course of the '06 season for the Patriots. And even then, you're getting him on a one-year deal for minimal cost. It's not as if we just declared him our franchise player.
How people can whine about signing a former starter on the cheap, I have no idea. The guy isn't a superstar but has shown he can be a capable player. If he turns out not to be, then it didn't cost us much. No one should be getting excited about this signing, but no one should be getting upset about it either.
