Rams third in NFL in 30+ yard plays

    Interesting bit:

The Washington Redskins said they took the St. Louis Rams lightly -- both in 2008 and again this season.

That will not happen as much if Sam Bradford continues on his current trajectory.

The Rams ranked last among NFL teams in 2009 with six pass plays of 30 yards or longer. For reference, the Philadelphia Eagles had 33. The Seattle Seahawks had 19.

With Bradford this season, the Rams already have five such plays, leaving them tied for third among NFL teams behind the Chicago Bears (7) and Indianapolis Colts (6), according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The Rams lost projected starting receiver Donnie Avery for the season before Week 1. Another starter, Laurent Robinson, has missed time. Brandon Gibson started in Week 3 after not even being active the first two weeks. Mark Clayton, acquired from Baltimore less than a week before the regular-season opener, already has 17 catches (he had 34 last season in 14 games, including 12 as a starter).

The difference this season? Bradford, obviously.

It's a tad early for projections but our boy might be on his way for settings records for passing yaradage and attempts for a rookie qb.

So much for the Rams don't stretch the field argument.

Stretching the field is important in the grand scheme of an offensive game-plan, but those deep balls are the ones that require protection from the line, accurate assessment by the QB of the safeties and where they are covering, and finally a well-thrown ball. For a rookie to get those things right with the line protecting him is pretty tough early on. I am prone to agree with the play-calling thus far with some downfield passing but mostly short and intermediate passes. INT's are more likely to keep a team from winning a game than the lack of downfield threat (real or perceived). And sacks put our QB at risk for injury.

That being said, Sam has always been known for his touch throwing the deep ball. That's something that can't be taught or coached, and I predict by the end of the season we'll be seeing a lot more downfield passing as both Bradford and Shurmur get more confident.

This kid is only going to get better as the year goes on as he gets players like Robinson and especially Oh-Oh back and establishes even better chemistry with our healthy guys. You can already see him taking control of the offense audibling out of run plays and putting the team on his back. You usually run to set up the pass, but last game I saw us passing to set up the run. It is really a shame we aren't 3-0 right now when we darn well could be.

Can you imagine the day when opposing defenses number one goal is not to shut down Jackson?

It may not be this year, but in the very short future I can see that developing.

And when that happens, Jackson is going to run wild, simply because the defense can't afford to put eight in the box.
