Rams tidbit on DB Coach from Chicago Sun Times

According to a Chicago Sun Times article from today, Lovie Smith will be (or has already) interviewing defensive backs coach Perry Fewell in an effort to fill their void at the same staff position. Fewell is our current defensive backs coach.

I wonder what this might mean for our staff.

ESPN is saying he has been hired. Not sure what it means, but could it mean A. Williams is our new secondary coach?

    Whatever, I'm glad he's gone.

I mean, 5 interceptions by the secondary this year.....all by Butler?

    Good riddance.

But he was a fine coach last year when we were tied for 4th with 24 Ints.

My question, what changed from last year to this year?

Don't know, maybe this secondary was a one hit wonder.

All I know is that I would scrap the entire secondary after the way they played this season.

    The entire secondary, Archuleta included.

Archuleta was playing with back injuries, Butler played very well, Fisher is fairly good (better nickel back) and Antuan Edwards is supposed to come in and learn the offense in 2 weeks (which I think he did pretty good at anyway). I don't think the secondary was all that bad. Remember our linebackers gave up much of the passing yardage. If anybody should be "scrapped" it should be Robert Thomas and Tommy Polley.

But what if they were just a one year failure?

I'm with you if we could find definite improvements. I think Edwards was an upgrade and would keep him for now. I want to believe Archuleta's issues were his injuries. I'm not sure about him now. When he's healthy, I like his run support ability (not impressed this year though). His pass protection is under par, however. Unfortunately, he's a "tweener' that I'm not sure we can afford except in run situations or as a backup. I hate to say that because I was really excited about him his first year.

If Arch can rehab in the off season and show true form in P-season then it will be how he performs in the R-season and if he can't .....see ya! the rest can go now!

Thankfully, Archuleta is signed to a minimal contract through 2005, so next season will be a contract year for him. Most players tend to come to play around that time, and I bet after having an off year with injury this season, Adam will be even more motivated for next season.

I want hope that Arch isn't the type of athelete that would turn it up for next year cause he is in a contract year.

I hope he is the type that played down this year due to injury, gets healthy in the offseason, and then comes in next year wanting to make up for this year...

I agree, and knowing his work ethic and what a freak he is for conditioning, I would hazard a guess that he is not that type of athlete.

It would be more cost effective to scrap the entire D coaching staff.

Players still make the plays Carlos. I could see dropping an INT every now and then, but the whole friggin season?

When we as fans begin to look back and really see what happened this year, how can coaching be the 100% fault when we can't even hold onto the ball defensively?

Re: Rams tidbit on DB Coach from Chicago Sun Times

Remember the defensive pride and motivation when Lovie was here. When a D Back missed an interception he dropped and peeled off pushups. Getting an NFL player to do that in practice, and in a game on national TV, takes pride and leadership. Lovie was the leader that instilled pride in his unit!

Now when a DB drops an interception he…well…. drops the interception.

Remember Lovie’s Loaf Awards? When a player didn’t give 100% he was singled out and embarrassed in front of his peers, and even sometimes in the media.

    Now when a player doesn’t give 100% he…. well…. doesn’t give 100%

Keep in mind the simple pushups and loaf awards were not the answer, but the underlying motivation based on the equity theory of personal management.
