Rams trade Robert Thomas to Green Bay for CB help

LB Thomas sent to Green Bay
    By Jim Thomas
    Of the Post-Dispatch
    09/03/2005

A trade involving Rams linebacker Robert Thomas has been rumored for weeks. And now it has happened.

The Rams traded Thomas on Saturday to the Green Bay Packers for cornerback Chris Johnson. Thomas, a first-round draft pick by the Rams in 2002 out of UCLA, started 32 games for St. Louis in his first three NFL seasons. Thomasí best year was 2003, when he finished with 102 tackles, tied for fifth on the team, in just 12 games.

Thomas was reduced to a role off the bench this preseason with the free-agent additions of veteran linebackers Chris Claiborne and Dexter Coakley. Johnson was a seventh-round draft pick by Green Bay in 2003 out of Louisville. But in two seasons with the Packers, he did not play in a game. He missed his rookie year with a knee injury, and missed last season with a leg injury.

The Rams are thin at cornerback because of Jerametrius Butlerís season-ending knee injury and Terry Fairís neck injury.

Sporting News Scouting Report on Chris Johnson:

Has good size, strength and speed. Has great burst out of his plant and moves well laterally. Can reroute and run with most receivers in press coverage. Is very raw and needs playing time. Tends to get sloppy in his footwork. Will peek into the backfield and has trouble with double moves.

I know they are thin, and I for one have been clamoring for secondary help, but Thomas for a 7th rounder who hasn't played in two years because of injury!?!?

GB has to be laughing all the way to the bank. I'm going on record to say this was the dipsh!t move of the offseason and stand ready to eat rotting New Orleans alligator meat if this pans out.

Thomas hasn't been impressive during his time here, but at least he's seen the field. Johnson hasn't played a single game. This move screams Schottenheimer all the way. He must have saw something in Johnson last year in Green Bay that impressed him.

Re: Rams trade Robert Thomas to Green Bay for CB help

Where they were drafted is irrelevant. Thomas is on a big contract for a backup, cant play outside linebacker, isnt great on special teams, tends to get hurt and carries a reasonably big cap number for next year, probably would have had to cut him and take a hit. frankly, i think with trev faulk and chillar, we are fine at the backup spots. Thomas may have been a reach pick for need, but what is done is done. I agree that this move smells of shottenheimer liking the corner we got, but so what. I will trust his judgment over that of the people on this board, myself included. No one, and i mean no one on this board ever said that thomas was a solid linebacker and you have to consider the cap effect. very very spotty play, he was terrible in the run game last year. what makes anyone think that we just dumped him? What makes anyone think that with that cap number there was any market at all?

I must admit I was thinking along the lines of the rest on this board. Thomas would not see much playing time with us this year with Chillar and Faulk also backups. Talent wise I would have thought horrible deal at first. But GC brought me back to reality when talking cap relief for a guy who was not going to be an impact player for us this year. This would be better then cutting him if that’s what they intended to do. If you cut him then you may have to eat some salary like GC said.
    Thank you GC.

Re: Rams trade Robert Thomas to Green Bay for CB help

So this means that they feel comfortable with Wahlroos as depth at lb ?? And what does this say about the depth at DB
    Ivy
    Fair
    Hawthorne
    Stone
    Bartell
    Garrett
    Groce
    Furrey

    ????

    I don't get this one !! :bored:

Re: Rams trade Robert Thomas to Green Bay for CB help

Wahlroos is not the appropriate comparison. i think you have to consider the cap, but personnel wise, i believe that trev faulk and chillar are the guys you need to consider for depth, not the walrus. We all know we need help at secondary, whether this guy will make a big difference really isnt the point because thomas wasnt going to make a difference. can anyone on this board truly evaluate how good thomas was on special teams. better than wahlroos? I personally have no idea, but i am very sure that the coaching staff has an idea.

I've got to believe this deal was about two things:

    1. Salary cap space. While Thomas does not have a huge cap number, it certainly is too big for a guy who is not likely to play much.

    2. The Rams DB coach came from Green Bay, so he must have seen something in Johnson he liked.

Ya. Chris Johnson was one of the if not the fastest guy who came out of his draft class.

Re: Rams trade Robert Thomas to Green Bay for CB help

After watching the KC game it was almost obvious to me that Robert Thomas was finished as a Ram. That game pretty much summed it all up.

Thomas was taken out on several plays by over pursuing. He missed several tackles, and he was too slow and took a bad angle on their rushing TD.

I wanted him cut. At least we got something for him.

Hmm, now Michael Stone is gone too. I thought we would keep him!

Dgr828, nice well-wishes to R. Thomas on his endeavors in GB.

Let's hope Chris Johnson ends up a healthy DB, perhaps even better than K. Garrett. :football:
