Rams Trivia - Share What You Know
Share a trivia fact that you know about the Rams. Perhaps it will be fun and possibly teach all of us things that we did not know about our beloved Rams.
The Rams uniforms during their first year in the NFL were red and black jerseys with long sleeves. The pants were brown. The helmets were brown leather.
Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know
David "Deacon" Jones, a member of the Rams Fearsome Foursome, coined the term "quarterback sack".
Jones retired before sacks became an official stat. It is believed had the stats been kept, Deacon might be the all time record holder for the quarterback tackle. It is also believed Deacon had 3 seasons in which he recorded 20+ sacks.
One last thing. It is believed by experts that Deacon had a season in which he recorded 26 sacks. To make this feat even more amazing, he did this in a 14 game season. And you think Michael Strahan and Mark Gastineau were studs!
This my friends is why the Fearsome Foursome was so amazing.
Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know
Dick “Night Train” Lane has the all-time single season interception record for a season with 14 INTs - he did this during a 12 game season in 1952...and as a rookie!
Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know
in 1988 we had the most sacks overall by a defense for the season. (got joe montana 5 times in the last game.)
incidently we gave joe montana the only shutout of his career, playing for the chiefs. we had Chandler at the helm for that game.
Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know
i believe it was Fred Gerke (sorry if i misspelled it) that first painted the rams horns on his helmet and they have been kept ever since
Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know
Good idea, Alpha.
1969: the mighty L. A. Rams -- and I do mean MIGHTY -- went UNDEFEATED during their first 11 GAMES of the regular season.
Winning week after week. Talk about excitement and expectations for us fans that year! :1:
Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know
That's correct, Ramsplaya16. Fred Gehrke was the man. He was somewhat an artist and came up with the idea and the design in 1948 to place the first emblem on those early NFL helmets.
Good one, my friend. :clanram:

Here's my factoid: "The NFL had some African Americans in the 1920s but banned them from 1933 through 1945, then reintegrated in '46 under pressure from the rival All-America Football Conference. UCLA's Kenny Washington was the first black player to sign in the post-World War II era, with the Rams."

In the spring of 1977, Jaworski was "traded" by the Rams to the Philadelphia Eagles for former All-Pro tight end Charles Young; the trade was technically "illegal" under NFL by-laws since both Jaworski and Young had completed their contracts, but no one raised any objection to the deal, so it was permitted to stand.

Good one, my friend. :clanram:
I painted a custom figure of Fred Gehrke in March and listed it on eBay. I was contacted by his grandson and by a lady that worked for Fred at Radioplane in the 50's. I was blown away that people who knew Fred Gerkhe not only contacted me, but were interested in bidding on the figure I made.
Fred called the Rams in 2000 when he heard about the uniform change that was to occur. He received assurances from Georgia Frontiere that the Rams horns would always be on the helmet. I believe Fred died later that year.
Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know
The horns are a symbol of the Rams more then anything else, the logo can change all it likes, but when people think of the Rams, they think of the horns

Talk about taking risks and trusting your young warriors! See link below for short article on this amazing feat in NFL news.
I don't believe this has ever been done again... :helmet:
