Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know

The Original GSOT - 1951 Los Angeles Rams
The Rams Win Their First NFL Championship In Los Angeles, Five Years After Moving The Franchaise From Cleveland. The Rams Defeated The Cleveland Browns 24-17 On December 23, 1951, At The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The Game Was Tied, Late In The 4th Quarter , When Rams' Quarterback Norm Van Brocklin Threw A 73 Yard Strike For A Touchdown To Receiver Tom Fears, Which Turned Out To Be The Game Winning Score.

Nearly 50 Years Later, The Saint Louis Rams (GSOT), Five Years After Moving From Los Angeles, Are Champions Once Again, By Defeating The Tennessee Titans In Super Bowl XXXIV (23-16).
The Game Was Tied Late In The 4th Quarter, When Rams' Quarterback Kurt Warner Threw A 74 Yard Strike For A Touchdown To Receiver Isaac Bruce, Which Turned Out To Be The Game Winning Score.
Talk About History Repeating Itself!

*NORM VAN BROCKLIN STILL HOLDS THE RECORD FOR MOST PASSING YARDS IN A SINGLE GAME (554 YARDS).
SET SEPTEMBER 28, 1951 (LOS ANGELES RAMS VS. NEW YORK YANKS)

Brothers Merlin & Phil Olsen played DT for the L.A. Rams, side by side, early 70s. :1:

Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know

The first coach for the Clevland Rams in 1937 was Hugh Bezdek. Bezdek went 1 and 10 in his first year, including 8 straight loses. Then in 1938, Bezdek started the season 0-3 and a was quickly replaced by Art Lewis to finish out the season.

Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know

Here are a few:
  • On November 4, 1979, the Rams held the Seattle Seahawks to a record low -7 yards total offense in a game.
  • Former Ram LeRoy Irvin holds the NFL record for most punt return yards in a game with 207.
  • Former Ram Robert Bailey holds the NFL records for the longest punt return at 103.
  • The Rams are the only NFL team to ever record three safeties in a game (1984 vs. Giants).
  • The NFL records for yards from scrimmage for a season (Marshall Faulk), rookie season (Eric Dickerson) and game (Flipper Anderson) are all held by Rams.

Actually, that honor goes to the Vikings and the short-lived "Angus McDonald's Purple Haggiseaters" site.

Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know

In 1973, Dryer became the only NFL player ever to have two safeties in the same game against the Packers. No other player has recorded more than two safeties in a single season.

Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know

First team to employ a full time special teams coach - Dick vermiel under George Allen.

First team to employ a full time pro scouting staff.

(Not only timely, but ironic).

And...as we all know, the first team to go 0-8 against division rivals, and then 8-0 the following year.

Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know

In 1936, the Cleveland Rams played in the second version of the American Football League and went 5-2-2 as a member team. The Rams were scheduled to face the Boston Shamrocks in the championship game, but the event was called off as the AFL folded.

Los Angeles Rams ... first pro football team to have all their games televised, 1950.

That's just good TV!

Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know

-Most Passing Yards in a game: Norm Van Brocklin (554). Vince Ferragamo's on the list with 500+ as well.

Robert Altman(director) and Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap, Star Trek Enterprise) are Rams fans.

How many Heisman Trophy winners have played for the Rams at one time or another?

Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know

Willie 'Flipper' Anderson, who once posted 336 yards receiving in a single game (Which remains the single game receiving yardage record to this day), was so called because his grandmother said he sounded like a dolphin when he was a baby.

Re: Rams Trivia - Share What You Know

Everyone has heard of the GSOT (Greatest Show on Turf), but how about The Scoring Machine?

The Scoring Machine, 1950 Rams, scored a record 466 points and rushed and passed 5,420 yards. They also set records for the most first downs, most passes attempted, most passes completed, most scoring passes, most PAT's, and most yards gained passing.

These are statistics for a 12 game season....in the days when the NFL champion was decided by Christmas.
