Rams vs Redskins Championship: Revisited & Predictions

65 Years ago the Washington Redskins and the then Cleveland Rams did battle in the 1945 NFL Championship game, at Cleveland Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio on December 16, 1945. It was the coldest NFL Championship game up to that time with a temperature of -8*F.

Oddly enough, the Redskins were lead by a QB named SAM, "Slingling" Sammy Baugh.

The Rams Quarterback was the rookie Bob Waterfield.

One play in the game lead to a significant rule change in professional American Football.

In the first quarter, the Redskins had the ball at their own 5-yard line. dropping back into the end zone, quarterback Sammy Baugh threw, but the ball hit the goal post (which at the time were on the goal line instead of at the back of the end zone) and bounced back to the ground in the end zone. Under the rules at the time, this was ruled a safety and thus gave the Rams a 2-0 lead.

The Rams went on to win the game, 15-14, the Safety proving to be the margin of victory. A NFL rule Change would soon follow as a result, that safety call now would be ruled an incomplete pass.

The 1945 NFL Championship was the last game before the Rams made the move to Los Angeles and was the 13th annual NFL Championship game.
