Rams working on contract with Saunders

    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    01/28/2008

In another sign that Al Saunders could be headed to St. Louis as the Ramsí offensive coordinator, the club has begun contract negotiations to bring the veteran NFL coach to Scott Linehanís staff.
"Weíre in negotiations with the Rams now," Saundersí agent, Bob LaMonte, told the Post-Dispatch on Monday afternoon.

"And I think we can come to an agreement."

Negotiations are a bit tricky because Saunders is believed to have made more than Linehan did last year as Rams head coach.

Linehan makes about $2 million a year; Saunders made in excess of $2 million as offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins, according to league sources, and was thought to be the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL last season.

Saunders had a year left on his contract with Washington when he was fired Saturday, and he gets that money even if he doesnít coach next season.

AdvertisementBut Saunders wants to work. And after spending 17 years of his coaching career with either the Kansas City Chiefs or the Rams, he considers the Midwest home, and probably will live in the state once he retires.

Saunders also is believed to be talking to Oakland, although it is uncertain for what position.

Excellent!!! Looks like a done deal. I would've actually preferred Saunders as HC over Linehan in 2006 (and I said so at the time), so this news made my day.

There is still hope for our 2008 Rams!

    Ditto that, Moose.

Let's start a money collection here at the Clan right away so we can assure any contract $hortage$ and just get Saunders to sign already!

I hope current negotiations, as we type, come through. :r

That money factor is going to be interesting. Either Saunders has to agree to a pay cut. Or we have to actually give Linny a raise. Should we give Linny a raise he most definitely does not deserve? I don't know myself. Or can he live with the fact that his OC makes just as much as he does if not more? I doubt that, though at this point, he should be thanking whatever God he prays to that he still has a job.

I hope this can be worked out so we can have ourselves a coordinator. His system is really complex so the offense is going to have to get to studying if this goes through.

I saw somewhere else where if the Rams offer him less then he made in Washington they would be on the hook for the difference between the Rams offer and Washingtons. I have not confirmed this. Maybe someone else here can confirm what happens in that scenario.

    .
He has nowhere else to go as a OC. Oakland is a mess and I doubt they are offering a coordinator's position. Oakland journalists are asking the NFL to intervene because the
    organization is so unstable.

The only O-Coordinator job is in St. Louis

Even if he had another place to go St. Louis is his best option. He likes the midwest and plans on living here when he retires. Linehan maybe a lame duck in which case he could be a HC candidate. The OL is going to be healthy and we have some good players at the skill positions WR, RB, TE, and QB. This team know his style offense already which several Redskins players said can take a few years to learn. This is the perfect OC position for him.

Yup. Oakland is the only team in a worse state than the Rams. While Linny is a lame duck next year, Davis has asked Kiffen to resign and Kiffen refused. St Louis would look like a dream job compared to that mess. Davis has no sense of giving time to adjust while St Louis has proven to be quite leniant the last few years. Oakland has to be out of the question for him.

Who would we have to pay the difference too? If we're gonna have to pay the difference to someone, it may as well be him.

Washington would have to pay the difference to Williams if the Rams offer was less then his Washington contract. This was what I read some where else however I am not sure its true. If that was the case though Williams could earn the same as what his contract would have been for this year while the Rams don't have to pay him more then Linehan. Not that I would care about them paying him more then Linehan its not my money. However I think if I chose to stick with a HC I would pay him at least as much as his assistance.

Good post. Youre right about that. It's either Saunders gives up or comes here. Or thats what I want to think. haha.

But it's so awesome that we're negotiating contracts. Great news.

I've read/heard from multiple sources that the job is basically his if he wants it. Ball is in his court, and the fact that negotiations are taking place is a positive sign.
