Rams working hard to get Bates

Rams | Team has a strong interest in Bates
    Thu, 19 Jan 2006 21:43:43 -0800

Bob McGinn, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports the St. Louis Rams have a strong interest in former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jim Bates to be the defensive coordinator on new head coach Scott Linehan's staff. Agent Gary O'Hagan told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the Rams called him and expressing interest in Bates.

Bates would be the icing on the cake IMO, and if he could bring along FA Grady Jackson (6'2" 345 lbs) to stuff up the middle of the RAMS D-line, he would be the cherry on top.

That would be nice, but will he be here next year at this time ??? It would be great to have some continuity for a couple three years with this new staff. Does he have a disciple to bring in as a lb coach who knows the system and can take over when Bates bails for a HC'ing gig next year ???

The thing with hiring top-tier coordinators, even if they're only around for a year or two, is not only that they're good playcallers but they have connections with the best positional coaches in the league as well, and are good teachers off the field. As long as Jim Bates can come in have a chance to build his staff and personnel - before he's promoted to another team - I'll be elated with the hire.
