    Raonall Who?

    From KFFL:

Rams | Team still working to sign R. Smith
    Thu, 30 Mar 2006 06:06:43 -0800

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the St. Louis Rams are still working on signing free agent LB Raonall Smith (Vikings) and hope to have a deal done by the end of the week.

My question is does anyone know anything about this guy? From what I gather, he is injury-prone and didn't really show much until he started the last few games of last year. He is a strongside linebacker, though, and supposedly the *****, Cardinals, and Packers are all looking to sign him, too. Is this guy really anything close to starting material or is he a special teamer or something?

You pretty well summed it up. He's a talented guy, and pretty decent special teamer, but he just can't stay healthy. In fact, of his 4 years in the league only 1 has been healthy. Fortunately, it was last year.

He was a good prospect coming out of college (taken in second round), but has had a slew of injuries. If he's healthy, and doesn't cost too much, he's probably a good gamble.

I heard he has good skills and is fast but wasn't very instinctive coming out of college. I think that's a bad combination a fast guy with no insticts he can run himself out of a lot of plays.

He's considered a strongside linebacker, but has started at WLB for the Vikings. He's also an experienced special-teamer.

He hasn't stayed healthy in the NFL at all, and those injury problems go back to his college career. Not a good sign. He's had a shoulder injury at least twice in his career, in his first year playing at Washington State and his first year in the NFL. Was out for seven straight games in late 2003 with a hamstring injury... put on injured reserve in 2004 with a concussion after starting a 'breakout season' [according to the Vikings' website].

That said, he has the skill potential to be a starter, with a nice combination of size and speed. He was the third linebacker taken in the 2002 draft, seven spots after Robert Thomas, meaning the Rams probably have some old scouting information on him along with whatever Linehan knew about him while he was an assistant with the Vikes.

Here's a short scouting report on him from the '02 draft:

Runs well, jumps even better ... Injuries plagued college career ... Former RB with a lot to learn, is a project ... Can get after the QB and be disruptive in the backfield
