The Red Zone

Hey , It's good to be back! That being said, Lets get to it. I've loved my Rams since 1967. ...the Rams can't score in the red zone. The 49'ers game is a great example of this. Forget the Hall muff and the Holt fumble. We were inside their 10 yard line 2 other times and settled for 3. Unacceptable with the talent that we have. Forget that Pace & Incognito were out. This trend is old news. Take a look at last years stats . You do it. I don't need to. Back to the '9er game . Almost 400 total offensive yards and only 16 points to show for it! 20 first downs to their 8? Compare Bulgers numbers of yards vs. T.D.s . Is he worth $60 million ? I beleive that a Q.B.s contract should be based on the divedind of POINTS scored , not yards gained. ( not that it's based on either ). Steven Jackson has been pumping up his value as a supreme back in the N.F.L. since day one. He's so good that he doesn't need pre-season reps........Bull.... week 1. ..2 fumbles and 58 yards on the ground. Week 2 60 yards on 21 carries..... So much talent, so little results. Is it coaching or execution?

I would have to opt for the latter, rather than the former, myself.:)

So you think Linehan is the answer for head coach?

Exstreme amount of yards and nominal points to show for them year in and year out!

The jury is still out on that one. He signed for 3 years and as long as there is steady improvement I think we need to support him.

Linehan really has no control over injuries and turnovers. He might be held responsible for the offense (or lack of, some say) as he did select the OC. We definitely have the "skill positions" players, but if the OL cannot give them lanes to run through and time to throw the ball then we will have a hard time outscoring the competition.

We cannot afford to consistently settle for FG's because there are usually only so many possessions in a game and it takes 3 FG possessions to outscore one TD possession by the other team. That won't win a lot of games.:x

But yes, 2 games into his second season I say let him do his thang, whatever his thang may be.:)

Redzone scoring is a significant concern, and you'd think a team with a power running game, a back who can catch well, and a premiere pass-catching tight end, we wouldn't be having so much trouble getting the yardage on a short field.

I'm not sure I'd put that on the quarterback, though. It seemed like when Denny Green was in Arizona, it didn't matter who was lining up behind center. They could put up 400 yards passing in a game, but they still wouldn't score many touchdowns. I tend to think it's more the play-calling. And I'd pay a quarterback based on what others are making and what it would take to replace him. Replacing a guy like Bulger is not easy to do.

maybe we should stay out of the red zone, it seems like we hit quick sand when we get there so from now on when we get close we just run pass plays into the end zone and thats it,send 5 receivers into the end zone and throw it to one of them.we need to score TD's, field goals are better than nothing but all they are doing is putting Wilkins in the pro bowl for having 200+ points this season.

I think the red zone offense will come around. Like you all say, we have the goods. But it takes more than practice reps to get a QB and receiver clicking, I think we have yet to see the full potential of Bulger-Bennett and Bulger-McMichael.

The red zone problem is simply the playcalling when we get down there all linehan/olsen call are 2 predictable runs on 1st and 2nd and a simple unsuccessful pass on 3rd which leaves us with 3 on many redzone trips that will never win games for us

It's the o-line..... Bulger has to have time...so does Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Joe Namath, Joe Montana..etc..etc..!!!

It's the o-line....Steven Jackson needs the slightest of seems....so does any runningback!!!

So your'e saying that when we gain almost 400 yards on offense and score only 16 points that the "O" line is responsible? So the defense of our opponents only take notice or exploit our "O" line when we get inside the red zone? I can't fathom that. The problem , to me, is either the play calling or the PLAY BOOK. This is an old problem. Not a new one.

If so this is just not true. We finished 10th in the NFL in scoring last year. With this play book. With Olsen calling the plays we avg to 27.5 points per game. I would agree that the O line is a big part of the stalling in the red zone, so is turn overs. Can't score when we give them the ball, that has nothing to do with our play book or play calling. Not one turn over has been a INT.

Unless there is a huge overhaul by next year quality wise on all sides of the ball, I just am not seeing Linehan coaching the Rams.

Rambos, good to see you. How many of those points were scored in the red zone?

Not as bad as one might think, link to site below. With Bennett and Randy we would hope to improve, but with the O line issues, its rough. SJ has had no room to run. Behind a solid line from the ten, he would pound it in there for sure. Last week, it did not happen.
