Report Card: Coaching gets a 'D'

    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    09/10/2007

Grading the Rams after their 27-13 loss to Carolina:

    QUARTERBACK:

No interceptions, but Marc Bulger missed on some throws he normally hits, often looking out of sync with his receivers.

    GRADE: C minus

    RUNNING BACKS:

Steven Jackson's two lost fumbles helped turned the tide Carolina's way. Worse yet, neither was the result of ferocious hits.

    GRADE: D

    RECEIVERS:

No catch went for more than 18 yards. For the most part everything thrown their way got caught.

    GRADE: C+

    OFFENSIVE LINE:

By halftime, the Rams had only three of five projected starters in the game; so all in all, not a bad effort.

    GRADE: B minus

    DEFENSIVE LINE:

Not exactly a stellar start. Zero sacks, some missed tackles and 186 rushing yards allowed.

    GRADE: D

    LINEBACKERS:

Brandon Chillar seemed more active than either Pisa Tinoisamoa or Will Witherspoon; unit came up with two fumble recoveries.

    GRADE: B minus

    SECONDARY:

Only one catch went for more than 16 yards, but it was the 68-yarder to Steve Smith, and there were two red zone TD catches by Drew Carter.

    GRADE: C minus

    SPECIAL TEAMS:

Good coverage, good kicking, a big return. When was the last time special teams got the best report card grade?

    GRADE: A minus

    COACHING:

What exactly were the Rams trying to accomplish offensively? Very few throws downfield; even fewer to the TEs.

    GRADE: D

I agree for the most part but receivers should have gotten a better grade, it's not their fault when the ball is thrown 10 feet from them and Jackson deserved an F for basically losing the game for us

I thought the D-line did better than the linebackers. The line at least clogged up the middle which forced most of the runs outside or cutbacks.

I agree. Carriker did a decent job in the middle. Little got caught a couple times going for the pass rush inside. Overall I thought the LB's was a bigger problem against the run.

I agree with the grades, including the D line, except I would also lower the linebacker grade to a D. They weren't much help either. Too many 10 yard runs.
