Report: Haslett's Little comments could be the latest case of tampering

    Per Profootball talk:

Rosenthal posted earlier today regarding the report that Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett "has let it be known" that he believes defensive end Leonard Little can still get to the quarterback on a consistent basis.

And since Rosenthal is not yet as cynical as yours truly (he'll get better at it once he turns 20), Rosenthal didn't mention the first thing that came to mind when I say his item.

    Tampering.

Regardless of how or where Haslett "let it be known," the fact that he's saying anything in any context about a player under contract with another team constitutes tampering.

We know. We know. A bunch of you will post comments regarding the fact that you don't care. And, frankly, I don't care that some of you don't care. Until the rules change or are enforced as written, I'll point out possible violations that, for whatever reason, are being ignored.

That said, ***** fans should care about the situation, since the Niners got their knuckles slapped a couple of years ago for the kind of thing that virtually every team does without consequence.
Free top 5 pick in a mid round anyone?

Seems to me there is a difference between complementing the abilities of a player and tampering. I don't think if Spags comments that Peyton Manning is a heck of a QB and is in awe of his abilities as a QB and leader that it means he's tampering.

Re: Report: Haslett's Little comments could be the latest case of tampering

The term tampering, as used within the National Football League, refers to any interference by a member club with the employer-employee relationship of another club or any attempt by a club to impermissibly induce a person to seek employment with that club or with the NFL.

All Haslett is doing is saying he's still good at what he does. Its a compliment, its not tampering. If they contacted Little in any way, THAT would be tampering. This is just someone needing a story so they're forced to make one up.

Yeah, I don't think this is much different from Spagnuolo saying he respects Vick's ability. As long as Haslett has not contacted Little in any way, it's probably a non-issue.

I know it could benefit us but I would be very disappointed in the league if complimenting a player, even one about to become a free agent, is ruled as tampering.

Re: Report: Haslett's Little comments could be the latest case of tampering

Earlier this week, Peter King was asked why Ochocinco wasn't accused of tampering by lobbying for wide receiver Terrell Owens to join the Bengals. King stated that Owens is a free agent with no ties to Bills.

If that reasoning is accurate, then any comments about Little aren't going to constitute tampering either since Little is also an impending free agent.

This seems really nitty. If this is tampering, is there any comment you can make about any player on another team that isn't?
