Report: Rams to waive guard Rokevious Watkins

Report: Rams to waive guard Rokevious Watkins
By Mike Wilkening on July 24, 2013, 2:44 PM EDT

The Rams will waive second-year guard Rokevious Watkins, Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com reported Wednesday.

Watkins, 24, played 36 snaps in the Rams’ Week One loss at Detroit in 2012 but missed the rest of the season with an ankle injury. In May, he was suspended for one game for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He was regarded as one of the Rams’ options at left guard entering 2013.

Watkins (6-3, 338) was the Rams’ fifth-round pick in 2012 (No. 150 overall).

    That's surprising.

I wonder if perhaps he failed another test since his suspension was announced.

This I think is rather surprising, given that he was a draft pick only one year ago and camp haven't really started yet. However after reading Nick's Mailbag it does seem like Watkins was a 4th option on the LG position. Low on the depth chart and suspended for violating substance-abuse policy. Not a good combination.

    Here's more:

Jim Thomas‏@jthom120sFarewell to OG Rokevious Watkins, Rams 5th round pick in 2012 has been released by team. Sources say he reported well over his target weight.
So, its was the result of something he put in his body, but it wasn't drugs, it was cheeseburgers.

Thats sucks read he was staying in town and not going to go home to make sure he stays in shape. Just unreal. Pead better be a stud, lets not forget we passed on Bobby Wagner to move back and draft Pead and Rok.

Re: Report: Rams to waive guard Rokevious Watkins

Watkins was set to receive a base salary of $405,000 this year. All he needed to do was mix in a salad every now and again and go to the gym a few times per week, and he had the inside track to make the team, at least as a backup.

It boggles my mind sometimes how these young guys squander an opportunity be paid that type of money for playing a game that most of us played as kids for fun.

I agree with Av, it's hard to understand things like this. You work your entire life to reach the NFL, then get lazy and let it slip away. Shotty was just talking in his presser two days ago about Watkins being in the mix for a starting guard spot, and now he's on the street.

He had weight and work ethic concerns dating back to college. It's not like he just got lazy once he entered the pros. The difference is you can't get by with those kind of bad habits at the pro level, whereas he could in college.

Hopefully this will be a wake-up call for him to put in the kind of work required of an NFL player, and he can latch on somewhere else.

Yes, it might have been due to PED, the one called Gluttony (even if it is an OTC item).

    Too bad.

If all true, does send a good message out. No BS coaching staff here. Really, time for youngsters to grow up and take responsibility and learn how to be a professional.

So the Rams got rid of their 2012 5th Round pick guard, good thing they picked up a 2012 6th round pick guard in Brandon Washington!

Fisher sent reminder texts to all the players warning them to stay off four-wheelers and wave runners, I guess he should have added Fourth of July dinner spreads.

Perhaps, but as Av noted, all he had to do was eat a salad every once in a while and exercise periodically, but it seems that was too much to ask. No drive, no discipline, no self control, equals no job.
