I saw that too. Glauber is a NY reporter, so it seems unlikely that he would be the one guy with access to Saffold or his agent. Sounds like a typical example of speculation masquerading as a news report.
FWIW, I Tweeted Tony Softli and asked if he's heard anything. If he responds, I'll post it here.
Maybe. But what would that actually mean. First, the Rams would not have to trade him. He's not going to hold out in his last year before FA. If they were to trade him and get, let's say, a 3rd round pick in return, they could find a RT in the draft.
I expect this will be much ado about nothing.
That's true, but why keep around a guy who is a detriment and doesn't want to play here? I'd hope we could get a 3rd, but I doubt it. Often injured, last year of his contract, and only a "good not great player" sounds more like a 4th/5th to me.
I just hope this is false and Rodger is happy at RT. I mean, initially he was drafted to play RT, with Jason Smith at LT. Fortunately and unfortunately, he outplayed Smith and grabbed the LT spot.
I heard from reliable sources that Roger did intend to make such a request but was injured on the way to the Snead's office. Initial indication is Roger will be unable to make his request for 2-4 weeks. He is to be re evaluated at that time.
WHAT SAY YE?
Our current RT position is not exactly stacked with talent. Acquiring JL doesn't automatically mean Saffold will be moved to RT. Saffold when healthy has played pretty well at LT. Acquiring JL would also be insurance if Saffold gets hurt.
A smack in the face? Hardly, job one for Les and Fish is to improve the talent on our team period - end of story. All the players are aware of this, it's the NFL baby!
While I still (MANDATORY DISCLAIMER) am not taking this report as true, if things played out such that the Rams' starting OTs next year were Jake Long and D.J. Fluker, I think I'd get over the loss of Saffold fairly quickly.
Very very thin piece of 'reporting' plus I don't see his tradeleverage at the moment. He needs to play his heart out and stay health this year to earn his big contract RT or LT.
Still I think it's coasting on the Jake Long news and get some RTs as reporter.
Again... playing the hypothetical... if the Rams were going to entertain a trade for Saffold, it would probably make sense to do so right before or during the draft. For a team that needs a starting LT at a good price and without a long term commitment, he could be a good option.
Rumor gaining steam:
Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) I hear what @BobGlauber heard: If #Rams sign Jake Long, their starting LT Rodger Saffold will likely ask to be traded if they move to RT
If this is true, why does an average player on his rookie contract who missed 13 games over the last 2 seasons think he has the right to ask for a trade just because he will be asked to play a different position?
