Rookie orientation well underway for RT Jason Smith

During a live 11-on-11 team period Tuesday morning, veteran defensive end Leonard Little schooled No. 2 overall pick Jason Smith on back-to-back plays.

First, Little blew around Smith at right tackle, getting around the edge so quickly that he was in quarterback Kyle Boller’s face in the blink of an eye. Lucky for Boller quarterbacks are off-limits, even in “live” situations at Rams Park, or he would have been splattered. Little yelled playfully as he met Boller as if to say “boo!”

There was more of the same on the next play, with Little again beating Smith. This time, Smith kept Little from getting in Boller’s face thanks to a strong tug of Little’s jersey. It would certainly have been a holding penalty.

Tuesday’s struggles notwithstanding, Smith has looked sharp overall blocking edge rushers so far in camp, whether it be in “team” situations or 1-on-1 drills. But he has been susceptible to inside moves on the pass rush, perhaps a result of footwork and technique issues resulting from the switch to the right side after playing left tackle at Baylor.

As a run blocker, Smith has been very physical. He “finishes” blocks, staying on defenders five yards or more down the field and maintiaining contact right to the whistle. Watching those plays, it’s easy to see why the Rams drafted him. He and right guard Richie Incognito, could form a very aggressive right side.

*D-LINE SHINES: It was a good day overall for the defensive line. DT Adam Carriker, who had been quiet thus far in camp, got some good penetration both in 1-on-1s and ”team” situations, the kind of penetration that would have blown up plays in a game. DE Chris Long had several good rushes at right end, and James Hall continues to be very difficult to block both at the end and tackle spots. He has been very explosive off the ball. One of the biggest question marks for the defense this season is whether the line can mount a consistent pass rush. It was just one practice, but Tuesday morning’s efforts had to be encouraging to coordinator Ken Flajole.

*QUICKER HITTERS: Blues hockey coach Andy Murray and assistant coach Rick Wamsley took in Tuesday’s practice. . . .During their live tackling periods Tuesday, the Rams worked on red zone offense (and defense) in one period and the two-minute drill in the other. Running back Kenneth Darby caught a pair of TD passes in the red zone drills _ one from Marc Bulger and one from Boller. Tye Hill had a red zone interception. . .Fullback Mike Karney (ankle) and strong safety James Butler (knee) sat out the morning session. Neither injury is thought to be serious, and coach Steve Spagnuolo said holding both players out was more precautionary than anything. . . .Wide receivers Ronald Curry and Brooks Foster have switched jerseys, with Curry now wearing No. 89 and Foster wearing No. 83.

    More following the afternoon workout.

Guess I have to like Foster better now... I was born in '83, so that's always been my favorite receiver number.

Good to see AC and Long blowing up would be plays. I hope that it's indicative of the D line skillset and not a poor showing on the O line.

Hopefully Little blowing by Smith is telling us how good Little will be this year! Glad to here the D-line is looking pretty good.
